If someone was trying to kick in your front door, would you rather greet them with a pistol, shotgun or rifle?

This exact scenario occurred in my area a few years ago. A thug, unknown to the homeowner, started kicking in the front door. The homeowner fired though the door and killed the thug. The type of firearm was never disclosed.

I realize all doors are not created equal. Let's just say a standard wooden panel front door.

not sure you would be legally justified in shooting someone thru a door, but I'd take a short barreled shotgun for when he got in, rifle if ya wanted to shoot thru the door.

I’m guessing the case will be reviewed by a grand jury but I can’t see an Alabama grand jury indicting a homeowner for shooting a guy kicking in a door.
This is an occupational risk burglars assume when they take up the occupation.
We had a guy do this in Marshall County many years ago. He didn’t kill the guy, just put birdshot in his arm. The guy was a career burglar who’d broke into homes in half his own neighborhood. Deputies joked about buying the homeowner some buckshot.

I'm using a shotgun, 12ga 000buck. But, as suggested above, I'm letting them kick the door all the way in first and will probably let them get far enough inside that they die in the house. No contest, stand your ground doctrine applies in the home.

I think you best bet is going to be a shotgun with buckshot for anything inside of 40 yards. Now... if you could pick the exact situation and knew you were going to have to shoot through a steel insulated exterior door, a car, a truck or maybe through the corner of a metal building like your shop, garage, mobile home, etc.....I'd pick an AK with steel core ammo.

All that will get you put in jail. Anything inside a house.... shotgun. No doubt.

you dont have to let them come in the house before you shoot them. You can be outside and shoot them. The castle doctrine applies to all your property. As long as you can articulate that you were in fear for your life. Of course thats gonna be easier to prove if the perp is in the house.

I'd choose pistol for shooting through the door though. But the shotty is ultimate home defense weapon.

I had a LEO pal of mine tell me that you shoot whenever you feel like your life is threatened, whether the perp is inside or out. He went on to add that it's much easier to get a jury to believe that your life was in danger when the other guy isn't alive to say otherwise. I hope I never have to put 12 people in that situation.

You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

One of our courtesy officers told me the same thing make sure you kill them if you have to shoot or theyll be in the courtroom saying they was accidentally at the wrong house their cousin musta gave bad directions and they got shot while politely knocking on the door.
