Anyone else plant potatoes?
I just got some in the ground yesterday. Maybe this rain won't float them away.

I planted some red taters last year. They did ok. For what ever reason they didn't have much shelf life.
Question. when planting taters ,can't you cut the eyes off to plant rather than planting the whole tater?

Yeah. That's right. The way I was taught was to slice the potatoe to where you at least have a couple of eyes in each piece. Out of 1 potatoe I usually end up with 2 to 4 different pieces to plant. It just really depends on where the eyes are located. Sometimes there all bunched together. I was also taught to let them sit a few days after you cut them up to let the skin heal over. I assume that is to help with insect and disease problems while the potatoe is under the ground but I am not sure.

One eye per piece is plenty. Need to make sure the eye has enough potato under it to support the eye. When you dig them up you need to make sure they get plenty of air to dry out or they will rot. We never let them sit after cutting. Be sure to place the eye on top facing up.

If you can get some horse manure to put in your rows while planting that will boost your yields

THIS!! They reallly need to air dry before you try to store them.

I have grown red, white and golden potatoes for a number of years with great success. You have to be sure to rotate them so the nematodes don't screw up the soil and the potatoes. Making sure to plant early is also a huge factor in the south. Potatoes do not fare well when temps climb into the 90's.

Having gone an a low carb diet in November, I don't guess I will plant any this year. Kinda sad, cause I gorw some dang fine potatoes!! LOL!

Be kind to one another and tell the ones you love that you love them often. We never know what tomorrow will bring.

When we dig ours, the ones that won't be eaten within a few week, we roll them in lime and let them air dryon a wire rack under a barn shed for a month or so.

My wife's grand father told me a cool way they would store potatoes when habeas a kid. He said they would for a hole about 2 ft deep and 5 or 6 ft wide and all corn stalks down a couple layers thick then put the taters on them then make a teepee over the top with several layers of corn stalks. I thought that was pretty cool.
