I like a mix of sunn hemp and buckwheat. After 60 days the sunn hemp is around 6' tall and the buckwheat has seeded out. At this point bushhog the field down to about 18" and the sunn hemp will take off again and the buckwheat will resprout from the seed you disbursed when you bushhogged. The buckwheat adds more phosphorous than the sunn hemp, so your getting all three,N,P,and K. Letting the sunn hemp go longer can cause the nitrogen to get bond up in the soil and not release for several months. That's not me talking it's what I've read. BTW, if you use cowpea's instead of buckwheat, you can mow them and they'll still grow. If building your soil, this is a great method, lots of biomass.

The number 1 problem I see consulting is guys know or have read what to plant they just can't get from A-Z or want to plant something that will not perform as well in there soil or size plots. I believe those of us that know tricks and secrets to plot success should spill the beans because we will help ourselves out by helping our neighbors and so on to improve our states deer herd. That being said I nor anybody on here have the perfect awnser to a one size fits all planting guide site unseen but if asked I will give my opinion and help if I can. The best biologist and deer managers change and adapt to the best new ideas and technology and to me this is my drug and addiction. I try something different and new every year to meet my goals. This brings me to another point goals of summer plots are you wanting bigger bucks or attraction to hunt over or a combination of both. A lot of disagreement on here is because of different goals. Example I have no club or members on my place and I want to grow monsters so everything planted is to grow them killing them is a after thought. I myself no longer plant corn I want something producing during the summer months instead of fall attraction. My point is I will awnser any question just let me know what your goals are and don't bash either side of the spectrum. I don't expect or think anyone should do the things I do I am just showing you guys my experiences and knowledge about something I love.

I guess I need to find someone who wants to split a bag of sunhemp and try it. I only need enough for 2 acres.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

1acre of corn will do fine but when it matures the deer, coons, etc. will take it out quicker than you can even imagine if you have many deer. I planted a 4 acre corn field last year for the first time and it far exceeded my expectations. It did exceptionally well and every stalk had 3-6 ears. I was thinking the corn would last well into the season. It didn't. The deer flocked to it like a swarm of locusts. It was gone in 2-3weeks. Planted in early April and it was gone by 1st of August. In the future, I won't plant less than 10-15 acres You obviously have way more deer than average. We planted a 4 acre corn field and had whole ears left last weekend. I'd say our population is average.

I guess I have too many deer. Ill just have to live with it, could be a lot worse. I can't imagine what it would be like to have an "average number of deer" that would take 7 months to eat 4 acres of corn It’s not too bad, but it’s not in South Montgomery county. Easily some of the best hunting in the state.
