I bought the home and land that I now call home back in 2011. In the nearly 7 years I've had it I have never gotten any deer pics, until now that is. As many of you know parts of Etowah, Marshall, and a few other counties are virtually void of deer or turkey. I have had cameras out for 2 or 3 assorted months each year with not a single deer and few turkeys. This is on 20 acres about 8 miles from town. I still haven't seen any bucks, but my little paradise officially has a few deer now. Once they found the corn pile, I got about 150 pics. It seems to be the same 4 does in all of them. The dates and time are not accurate because I have never bothered to set the time stamp on any of the cameras here. There has been no need unless I wanted to know when raccoons and coyotes came around.





There are a few other critters including a black looking coyote and a fox that I have no previous pics of. There is a daylight pic of the yote too but only a partial.





Yeah, I know it's a cheap camera. I wouldn't put a good one where this one is.

I can't begin to express how tickled I am to finally get deer pics in this deer desert.

If you feed them, they will come. Sometimes it takes seven years apparently. Looks like you have the start of a nice little herd. Good deal.

Yeah, most people take it for granted that if the have a little acreage they WILL have deer on it. Not so much so around here. I never saw the first deer within 20 miles of here until the mid 1990's. Sand mountain folks are accustomed to traveling to hunt. At least the ones on the southern half of the mountain. That is changing now, and there are a few places with a decent population, but there are still voids too.

Keep 'em fed! My little 13 acres holds a small herd. I've had pics of 11 at one time but the surrounding land has a lot to do with it.

Sweet! Glad you got some that have shown up. If you have a place to do it, plant them a soybean patch for the summer. That sure helps hold them around.

And you're spot on. Most people have no idea how small a deer population there is around these parts. We were just getting enough around to see some on occasion then the state decided doe deer were apparently bad and allowed 2 per day to be killed. I'm glad they dropped the limit, but they're still one per day high on it in this area.

Agreed 100%. I can't get a tractor down to the area I'd like to plant so I guess I'll just have to put in a 4 wheeler plot. It's not so tough to walk in, but walking back out is a chore. I can get an ATV in there ok, but even that is work. I plan to start keeping some kind of food there for them all the time now that I have evidence they are there.

If you want to see more deer/turkey you may want to focus on getting rid of the yotes and coons. They are both turkey/nest killers and the yotes will ruin your small deer herd

No doubt. I know a guy that likes nothing more than to bust a coyote. A few years ago he heard a ruckus behind his house one afternoon and went out there and found his rat terrier torn apart. I'll have to get in touch with him.

A good trapper can clean it up for you too

When I had cameras out on our place, I always enjoyed seeing "my" deer and other wildlife...most of the bucks we saw were smaller, scrub bucks, but they were "ours", and we enjoyed seeing them!

Id grew up in a place where there used to be many turkeys and plenty of deer. Still has a fair amount of deer BUT... Its one if the few places....and our turkeys went from 90 to nothin in a very short time. My dream is to see huntable populations of turkeys return to marshall co. I know theres pockets still around but they might as well be madison and jackson county birds. I wanna hunt turkeys in boaz and asbury and douglas and pleasnat grove..alder springs..guntersville...more than any other...south sauty where i grew up. They were there...but now they are gone....they could be there again and everywhere else if wed kick progress in the teeth an try to take better care of our land and natural recources. Im just dreamin i guess..
