To drive a car you need a license.

Should people need a license to purchase a gun?

Driving a car isn't a constitutional right. Also, you don't need a license to buy a car, you need a license to operate it in public. So to really equate the two, you'd need to say "require a license to have a gun in public" - which already exists in many places (CC permit).

Devils advocate: Buying a gun isn't a constitutional right. Keep and bear is. And actually, you need a license and insurance in order to buy a car, at least from a dealer.

standard disclaimer: I want no more gun regulations and less government in my life overall.

Don't take this personal, because it's not meant that way, but 'm gonna need to see some sort of documentation on that....that sounds a little hard to believe.

I think this arose for the "STAR" act requiring you to "prove you are who you say". Alabama has it. Believe me, it took me over three hours last March to get all correct documents.

STAR act is for domestic air travel. Just gets the vetting process out of the way. Don't know of anything you gotta have other than cash/check to drive out with a vehicle? Gotta have license to get insurance...and insurance to get a tag.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

I shouldn't need a concealed carry permit either.

Last 2 cars I have purchased from a dealer required ID and proof of insurance.

I bought new from a dealer in 2017 and didn't give them any proof of insurance. Not sure on the license, they may have gotten my drivers license but I don't remember it. If the dealer financed your vehicle they may want proof of insurance for their own protection.

I just bought a brand new truck off the lot. They don't let you leave with it unless you have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance.

Did they finance it in-house? I could see requiring some sort of ID for the purposes of a bill of sale, and I could see the driver's license (specifically) and proof of insurance if they're financing, but if you are paying cash, I don't understand how they can require a driver's license (as opposed to an alternate form of ID) or proof of insurance. Now they may have their own policy, but I'm not sure I believe that's law.

I paid cash for my RAV4. All they cared to see was the cashiers check. ID was required to issue new title, which is a state requirement, not the dealers.

You're only required to provide proof of insurance if you finance it and you're only required to have a license to test drive one. You can pay cash and have a licensed driver test drive before you buy

Absolutely Not. Youre delving into universal background checks when its a requirement to have a license to buy a firearm.
The less government in our lives the better. I personally do not want anyone telling me what I can do with my personal property when I'm the one who paid for it

Did you finance or pay in full? Did you trade a vehicle in (I could see them requiring ID to make sure you are the legal owner of the trade in).

And again, I'm not doubting y'all saying they made you show this and that, I'm just curious A) about the details of the transaction, and B) if it's a law or just a dealership's policy.

cars aren't guns. no reason to even involve cars in the discussion. Constitution says "shall not be infringed". a permit infringes. in fact, there are too many gun laws now. yes, I do think those gun laws should go away and it should be like 1791... at least as far as some laws are concerned.

remember, the gun isn't the problem. and they aren't cars.
