Those idiots are a true danger. Had one come across 4 lanes of traffic on the interstate and sideswipe my new to me truck. Luckily no-one was injured.

they outnumber drunks a thousand to one and are just as dangerous.

This is the main reason why self driving cars will be a reality in 10 years. That way people won't have to put the phone down, ever.

Yes they are. He went all the way from the far left lane into me in the far right lane. It's a miracle he didn't cause a major pile up crossing as many lanes as he did.

had a good friend (good father, good husband, good person overall) killed texting while driving, a year ago on Valentine's Day (how's that for a memorable day for his widow and young son). interstate traffic was at a standstill due to a wreck and his front end went under the back of an 18 wheeler trailer. we have a pact amoung friends, driveby being one, that if we're caught txt'ing and driving we get a swift kick in the nuts! driveby is on the honor system, since he's the furthest, but we've all been mindful and it still gets mentioned from time to time to keep it fresh in our minds!

experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

They are way more dangerous than drunks if you ask me, at least most drunks are actually trying to watch the road and where they are going, these butt wipes on their phones don't even look at the road half the time.....

I am shocked many new cars allow you to respond to texts via the dash, talk about distracted driving.

One of the real estate agents I do a lot of business with has that feature as well.

Every time I see someone texting and driving (which is all the time in Birmingham) I always want to lay on the horn, but figure it will cause a wreck. If my wife is driving I'll have the windows down, if someone is texting and their windows are down too I'll scream "STOP TEXTING AND DRIVING". I usually just get cussed out.

Try telling them to get off the damn phone and drive. It pisses me off to see these fools think a text is more important than our safety.

Jono, I always want to honk at them also but like you I figure it would cause them to wreck, What makes me the maddest is getting behind one that is texting at a red light, they never look up to see if it has turned green at least until 3-4 car horns start going off, the only thing that makes me madder are bicyclists riding in the middle of the road holding up traffic...

These type od apps should help in the near future:

"Soon, Apple will introduce a new iPhone feature that will do away with that annoying -- and dangerous -- urge to look at a text message while you're driving.
The feature, called "Do Not Disturb While Driving," will be part of Apple's iOS 11, a new version of the operating software for Apple mobile devices.

Whenever the phone is connected to a car using either Bluetooth or a cable, or if the car is moving, the phone will withhold any notifications for things like text messages or news updates.

If someone does text you while you're driving, the phone can respond with an automatic message telling them you're driving and can't respond just now."

Or the doofus in the left lane on the interstate speeding up and then slowing down to 65 camping out in the left lane and then when you finally get the opportunity to pass on the right you look over and see them texting. Those are times when I wish I was driving a junker 1976 LTD reinforced with mild steel tubing and 1/4" plate with a pair of 25mm chain fed Gatling guns mounted in the grill... grin (Just kidding! grin)

But seriously... People like this on their smartphones and texting and such is what caused Mrs. Irish and I to basically give up motorcycling. She and I have both almost been hit several times while riding. They were very close calls. All it would take is one idiot not paying attention to their driving and one of us would have been dead or seriously debilitated. Now at least we have a sports car with steel around us and a roll bar in it. We've still had people almost hit us in our little car to the point where I ride with at least the parking lights on all the time.

It's just another straw on the camel's back of a broken society. These are all symptoms. It all boils down to people's general disregard for the peace, happiness and welfare of others. These are all symptoms. The root cause is the degeneration of a civil society.

No... There should be a feature of all phones that uses the GPS that's already on every damn phone. It would work like this:

Once the phone detects that it is moving say faster than 15 mph the texting feature is automatically disabled.
