I get asked regularly to take people hog hunting and most of the time If it's someone I know or a person I feel like is a decent person I take them. 95% of the time I take them with dogs and sometimes the person asking says " I just want to go shoot one. " in those cases most of the time I turn them down. My reasoning is.......#1. The only reason I hog hunt is to train dogs and watch them work. I couldn't care less about waiting on a hog to come out to shoot it......#2 I like to do the method that is most effective for the amount of time I have to devote to it. I work an average of 60 hours a week and have a wife and two kids at home. When I go I like to go and Catch 4 or 5 and sometimes more by lunch and go spend the rest of the day with family....... and #3 To increase the chances of seeing a hog to shoot keeping a place baited isn't cheap. If someone wants to pay me for the bait, gas, and time then by all means I will take them. Lol but 90% of the people asking want to go for free even though I have roughly $4800 in leases, the cost of bait, and feeding dogs about $1300 a year that I could be hunting that day. I love taking new people and especially kids hunting but at the same time it gets aggravating when people you don't even know get upset when you turn them down on a hunt that they expected you to go out of your way for them to hunt your lease for FREE!!!

I would bet the people who ask to "just shoot one" don't understand all the factors at play that you mentioned. Maybe they are just inexperienced people who want to kill a hog and don't really ever think about the fact that it's asking you to change the way your normally hunt. If you explained that your method is actually more exciting and action packed maybe they would understand and be all in (maybe?). Non-hunters sometimes just don't understand everything that goes into it. I don't hunt with dogs, so I wouldn't know much about what goes into that method either.

It's cool you take people though and show them. I'm sure they are pumped after that adrenaline rush with a dog catch/kill!

I explained it to this man and he still got mad. You would be surprised at how many times in the last few years this has happened. I just don't understand people's thinking. If a man tells me he will take me on a hunt on his place then I'm not gonna get mad if he says which method we are gonna use to hunt. Lol

I quit taking people. They get there then want to run the show or tell me what they wanna do. Or get mad if they dont see a hog then start talking like there aint no hogs around lol. Now...i hunt alone or with one man thats my huntin buddy. Its him or my son. I wont ever take anyone else ever again. Some guys think the woods are just crawling with hogs behind every tree and aint never been to the place

I could see people not wanting to wade sloughs and swamps, but instead walk down a well trimmed road and sit where they can get a clear shot over feed. I would prefer that myself. Some places I wouldn't chase a hog into, believe me I have been in a few places the hog can stay there. Let those that want to sit pay you in feed, cash, or bait sites in exchange to hunt. A lot of people would like a hog these days over deer. Nothing like some fresh bacon. If you got the hogs you could make some good money. Just another way of thinking I guess. Both could be fun.

The problem is that most people asking just want a hand out and are not interested in paying for anything. Which is the reason they don’t have any where to hunt in the first place.

Why not just trap em? Less time away and more death

because trapping ain't as much fun as doggin em....and traps don't bark or hit em like a pit bull dog does.

of course throwing Dylan into a trap with half dozen 70 pounders ought to be fun to watch..... shocked

False statement. Lol with trapping you have to go bait and legally you are supposed to go check the trap every day. And as far as more death that is not always the case because there are two guys on our lease that trap year round and I catch 3 times more than they do on the same property and I only get to hunt it 5 months out of the year.

Kind of sounds like they want to keep some around to keep a steady supply of meat in the freezer. Do they cut the young boars and let them go?

No they kill everyone they trap or see and most of the time they don’t even clean them. In deer season they just gut shoot them and let them run off.

I have cameras that send pics to my phone daily, trapping can catch the entire group of pigs st one time and the gate only closes when I tell it to. Just seems much less invasive to me but to each his own just glad you kill a bunch of em!

I hunt in the river bottom where there’s 50 entire groups and 45 of those groups are trap shy and no cell phone service. But I’m not doing it to try to get rid of the hogs. I do it to watch my dogs work and train them. The hogs are not a problem on our place other than they eat all the other members deer corn. Lol which is why the other two members hate them so bad. As far as destroying property you can’t hardly tell we have hogs other than some rooting in the ditches of the roads.

I had the same problem when I used to remove honey bees for a fee (VERY LOW FEE). I was doing it to make a few bucks to offset my hardware costs for beekeeping. You would be amazed at the people that would offer to let me “get the bees as long as you don’t tear up anything...and you can keep half of the honey”. I would suggest they cut my grass free for a month, and they could bring their own lawnmower and gas.

The freeloaders out there are breeding and multiplying at an astounding rate. I don’t blame you for not wanting to take anyone.
