MDFWP is requiring anyone using hog traps in the 6-county CWD zone to obtain a permit for the trap in order to use bait:

https://www.mdwfp.com/media/news/law-enforcement/mdwfp-requires-hog-traps-to-be-permitted/

For those who aren't in favor of more regulations and such by governement agencies, this is only one example of why we should all be more educated about CWD and interested in keeping it out of Alabama. Reporting rogue importers, anyone coming from a CWD-state ignoring the prohibition on carcasses, taxidermists who may be doing something with non-resident carcasses or heads, or whatever.

Interesting. Hadn't thought about giving up a lease because of CWD.

That part of the state is a good one.

The area this deer was found positive has some of the highest leased land in the country too. It’s in the heart of the best deer hunting in the southern US.

This could be ugly for everybody not just us over on MS. Hopefully people use common sense concerning this. But I'm pretty sure there will be feeders all over the damn place in MS and people will bitch and be dumbfounded if it hits their area.

Feeding isn't prohibited outside the CWD zone, right? So it'll continue.

I imagine Anderson Tulley is going to take a financial hit this next lease season.

Yep. I hadn’t read too much other than the initial story, but I just went and looked at the CWD management map and it is pretty depressing. I grew up hunting in Mississippi and killed my first 10 or so deer within the 5 mile containment zone and probably 80% of all the deer I have ever killed have been within the 25 mile buffer zone.

It just sucks how that area is going to be impacted - from multigenerational hunting clubs, to awesome public land hunting areas, and places like Tara Wildlife. Knowing how good that area is and the uncertainty of what the future holds for the deer and deer hunting culture is just depressing.

Hunting will go on but just with some changes. Sucks to have it, for sure.
