How many people add some type of white clover to you fall mixes. For the ones that do how much growth and utilization by deer do you see the following spring and summer. I know you can more than likely never get as much forage/nutrition out of that clover over planting peas or something. But if you were going to plant peas or something then there would probably be no need to plant the clover. But planting summer plots would cost a lot more and you need more acreage for it to be beneficial. Will they get enough benefit out of the clover the next spring and summer to justify adding it to your fall mix.

If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

I try to plant oats and overseed with Yucci Arrowleaf clover. Best mix I have ever tried.

I do, I do. I always add some durana. Patriot is good too. They work well together.

I also add a little white clover into my mix. It's not just for the deer....it also helps add some N back to the soil which is a major driver of soil function.

Mike it will keep deer and turkey in the area all the way though the spring and summer till the next fall planting if you take care of it by spraying and keeping it trimmed up when needed.

Adding crimson or arrow leaf is good, and economically more feasible. They are both annuals with fast growth. I don’t plant any white clover in a fall mix unless establishing it as a permanent clover field. It usually takes more than one growing season for white clover to establish and flourishes after year two. It’s also expensive. I feel like I’m throwing my money away. It don’t have time to fully mature and then you disc it up and start over. crazy

For those of us that don’t disk our plots and “start over” every time……white clover can easily be grown in conjunction with fall/winter annuals. This durana is still growing in my field from where I just added 1 lb/ac into my fall mix a few years prior……That’s $5 an acre to have clover still growing into the latter part of the summer.

Every plot I plant will have clover in the fall mix. White everywhere it will grow good and crimson and other varieties in more dry Sandy soils. I also have small white/ladino fields all over the place that are just for clover. I play with them year to years example I spread a little chickory when I fertilized them back in September just to try something.

Soil types come into play when deciding if white clover is the right choice.

Do deer eat the arrow leaf better than Crimson and how long will it last the next summer.

Arrowleaf will mature a little later than crimson. Crimson is usually peaking in growth in late April to May and arrowleaf matures later into June and will last through July. It also gets 3’ high and puts out a lot of foliage.

What does a bag of arrow leaf clover cost, how much do you put into your fall mix.
