...on bow sight. 52 yo. Life time rifle Hunter decided to get a bow. I think the sight options are more overwhelming than the bow options. I don't have much experience at all bow hunting, early 90's last time, so I have no preconceived ideas about bow sights. After researching forums and reviews I'm right back where I started, nowhere!! Lol!!

My gut is saying go with 3 pin, 20, 30, 40 or perhaps 4 pin and add 50. Will hunt the Alabama woods with bow. Probably never anything else. From my research I see lotsa folks returning to single pin. I don't really want to dial a sight with deer present. I'm trainable. What would you guys, whom I respect a great deal, suggest I begin with and train my brain? Make and model recommendations welcomed as well. Thank you in advance for input. Gj

I'd say go with a 4 pin. With todays bow speeds, that should be 30-60yd pins. You really can get by without a 20 pin.
Or, make it 20-50yds if it makes ya happy. Just a good sight, not to spendy, Copper John's not bad. Wanna spend money, grab a spot hogg or Black Gold sight. All of my multi-pin sights were 5 pin and I removed 1 pin as soon as I got it home to make it a 4 pin

I've got a "3 pin" but have taken off one so it really just a 2 pin. You should be able to shot out to 35 yards with just two pins (at least that's the case for me). I don't shoot at deer any further than 35 yards as it is. I would says more times than I won't shoot beyond 25 yards.

I shoot a single pin slider. It is good to 30 yds for me without a drastic change in hold over/under. In the 80s I had 3-4 pins but technology is so much better than the bows of that era. Bows are faster reducing the need for more pins. I have made an adjustment once and that was a deer I killed at 40yds. It was eating acorns so I had time to range and get ready. I cannot recall an incident yet where the single pin has caused me to miss a shot opportunity that a multi pin would have allowed me to make.

Single pin is all you need with today’s bows. And I like a vertical pin. Less area covering the target.

I’ve got a fixed single pin. It’s set at about 23 yards. I’ve practiced enough to know at about 30 yards on a medium size deer the arrow will drop right in if I put the pin on the top of their back. Closer than that, I put it right on their chest. I don’t shoot beyond about 30 yards. Keep in simple.

As a beginning bow hunter, you’re not going to be able to judge the distance well enough to decide which pin to use in a multi pin set up in my opinion. Good luck.

Thank you, guys! Good input and advice. Think I'll keep it simple. I saw a vertical pin that had two dots making it a double pin. Spot Hogg I believe it was. That might be a good option. Ya' know, 40 yards is long ways....like a good punt! So the need for multiple pins, in Alabama woods, is probably over kill. Thank you again for input, Gj

Actually multi pins not bad at all. Its user preference. The key to shooting single pin sights is knowing your bow and how to shoot it. I keep my pin at 30yds, if I see an elk I thinks 40, I aim 4 to 6" high. I also know where to aim if he's at 15yds. That's a cool thing with a single pin.
Multi pin, if he's at 40, use 40 pin, same for 20 or 30yds.
Just choose what you think will be most cimfortable

I still shoot a 6 pin but just haven't changed sights since I used to shoot 3D. 20,30,35,40,45,50 in alternating green and red colors. Also still shoot a sub 300fps bow though.

I shoot a blck gold. It has 4 pins and the entire housing can be raised and lowered with a wheel. I like it cause when I hunt I can fix the pins at 20-50, and dont have to worry about moving the dial. And when I practice i can lower my housing and practice with my smallest pin out to 80 yards. It's fun to launch an arrow 80 yards and really helps your form.

It depends on your arrow speed, but some bows shoot so quick the pin gap is very close. I found a single pin sight was easier for me to focus on.
I shoot a HHA for what its worth. Maybe go to a pro shop if they have some bows with different sights mounted

If you can, try both before purchasing (I understand that may be difficult.) Some people like a single pin to look at because it’s less complicated even though it’s a little more work. Multi pin is easier to mix up when you’re aiming at a deer but less work when that time comes. I prefer adjustable pins but learned on a 4 pin sight and still love it. But if you go multi pin, definitely go with 4 over 3.

Something has happened to bowhunting. It was supposed to be about getting close to the animal and making a kill shot. Not long range arra slinging and calling a tracking dog. Concentrate on one pin and making good shots in 30 yards or less. I'd suggest a whisker biscuit arrow rest and a pendulum sight. Let the sight do the work instead of guessing the range. Keeping it simple works.

So yeah, my motivation for getting a bow is to get in there amongst em, in the thick stuff, the woods! Bow is Elite Synergy, 60#. Not setting any speed or distance records but very smooth and accurate. Leaning towards a HHA single pin or a Spot Hogg that has a single pin with two dots.

I use the SpottHogg Fast Eddie XL. You won’t regret it and the sight is tough as nails.

With today's bow speeds, a pendulum sight is kind of a waste of money. I used one a few years and on the ground in hilly country, they can be a pain.

one pin is normally good , determine by where you hunt ( out west you may need more than one ) most shots in Alabama will be 40 yards or less, set one pin at 25 , aim at bottom of deer if closer than 25 yards, and top of deers back at 40 yards, if father away than 40 yards, don't shoot !

Single pins fine "out west". Its all about knowing your equipment and your limits. I hunt NW Oregon, I'm good to 40/45yds without adjusting my single pin sight and very confident at that range. Anything farther, ill range and adjust.
What everyone's failing to think about is its really more simple for someone to use s 3-5 pin sight if new to the sport. Multiple pins simplify things for most .

The older I get, the more I love my single pin HHA.

Vertigo kept me from climbing a tree this year and knew there was no way I could stand long enough from any elevated position to allow me to bow hunt this year. I really missed it and look forward to next fall.
