Hi everyone, I hope its ok that I post this here, but I recently wrote a book on Fly Fishing for Redeye Bass. It is now available on Amazon if its something you'd be interested in! Just search for "Fly Fishing for Redeye Bass".

"We realized that hunters need to lead the conservation conversation or risk becoming irrelevant." - Jim Posewitz

The same is true for anglers. Want to learn about native redeye bass in Alabama and other southeastern states? Order a copy of Fly Fishing for Redeye Bass: An Adventure Across Southern Waters. Learn about the rivers they call home, the dangers that threaten those waters, and why some species of redeye bass need our immediate help. Understand how to read water and locate optimum redeye bass habitat, what food they eat, and how to best imitate that food with flies. After reading, you will have a firm understanding of why they are the perfect fish for the adventurous fly fisherman.

will do, I'm a redeye fan from way the heck back. Grew up on them in the Cahaba River in the early 60's.

I remember you saying that in some of my posts of my trips. I'd love to talk to you about your experiences sometime. I always enjoy meeting another redeye bass angler!

You wouldn't happen to have any contact infor for Dan Catchings would you? I know you were a game warden, and he a biologist, but thought y'all may know one another.

I'm not much of a fly fisherman, but the redeye has been my favorite fish for many years. Back in the 70s, 80s and early 90s there were seven or eight creeks in Coosa Co where I could go fish for redeye. Just about all of them are blocked off now. I've been thinking that I need to find a creek in the Talladega National Forest that I can wade next summer.

I'll look forward to reading your book.

I have caught a bunch of red eye bass wade fishing the cahaba when I was a teenager. There a lot of fun and I look forward to reading the book!

That's one of the best places, honestly. This book doesn't give a list of streams to fish, because as you fellow turkey hunters know, that kind of info isn't just handed out. However, it does include the main drainages where they are native and how to best locate and fish for them.

Adding this to my list of books to read. I've caught one red eye while fly fishing, and it was not on purpose. Beautiful fish though. I'm ready for some warmer weather, I need to get out and practice casting again. Still a novice but I love it!

Mr. Lewis,

Does this book contain advice on watersheds to fish for redeyes or is it just a kind of general how-to fish for redeyes? or both?

I've FF for redeyes several times in the TNF and NE Alabama, but am interested in some new places and would buy your book if it might help in that regard. I'm not looking for anyone's secret spots, just a general description of waters where you might find them available for FF.

Thanks.

I remember you talking about the canyon a while back. There's some info on it in there.

Hi! It does tell you what drainages to fish for native redeye bass species and how the species of redeye bass in that watershed are unique. It does not name tributary streams, because exploring and finding those on your own is part of the fun in fishing for redeye bass!

I'll definitely be picking your book up. I have a book titled "Fly Fiishing The Gulf Coastal Streams 1920-1965". There is a ton of info on fishing south Al and North Fl rivers. Much of it is still relevant today. I have been catching red eyes on the upper Choctawhatchee for almost 40 years. I have been told they aren't actually red eyes, but they look just like the pics I see.

Yea, those are not true redeye bass. They are only native to the Coosa, Tallapoosa, Cahaba, Black Warrior, and Chattahoochee rivers in Alabama. Specifically above the Fall Line in those drainages. There is species of spotted bass in the Choctawahatchee called Choctaw bass. I grew up down there in Geneva, AL.

We wear the redeyes out over the summer here on the Cahaba. They will smash a buzzbait.

Looking forward to getting the book.

Can't blame you for not sharing your holes. A small redeye stream can't take a lot of pressure. In my experience, it doesn't really matter which creek you are on; every creek in Coosa Co that I ever tried held red-eye. I used to fish the smaller creeks early in the summer, and focus on bigger streams later in the summer and all the way to October. Weogufka Creek on the old part of the Coosa WMA had some great wade fishing during droughts. Many of those would be spotted bass, but I would catch redeyes too.

I don't mind talking publicly about the Weogufka now;it's all been taken out of the WMA and there isn't even access to float it.

I've ordered your book and look forward to reading it. There isn't much published info on the redeye.
