Just came home and started busting a sweat only to find the thermostat set on emergency heat.

Started asking around how it happened, and it turns out some middle school teacher got her HVAC Liscense on the side. Told my wife that’s the best way to keep our outdoor unit from freezing. It’s been on for two days straight.

That's gonna run the bill up a little.

Someone should explain to her where the heat strips are and what they do.

I wanna see what the expert’s power bill is. This little two day stint cost $60 over the cost of the average. At least I caught it before it turned into a mortgage payment.

My emergency heat still goes by the thermostat. Doesn't feel much different. Dreading the bill. My compressor had been out since Thursday, but it has saved us. 2 year old unit still under warranty.

I don't know about the unit freezing up but the meter should be good and limbered up

Fortunately my wife stays hot. I’m the one that turns on the heater. It could be 65 degrees in the house and be fine. I can’t sit in a house that cold. UNLESS I’m sleeping. I prefer to sleep with the room cold.

My wife did that once......ONCE. Power bill was over $500.

So, I'm guessing you have a heat pump? Does it actually keep up in these temps? I have a heat pump, but my "aux" heat is gas furnace, doesn't even have the strips, it's a hybrid unit. I switched it over to aux a week or two back and let it ride. My heat pump would be running constantly trying to heat it up in these temps.

WOW. It is funny cause we have a part in our system that leaks freon very slowly and we fill the unit in the beginning of summer every few years. If it runs out in the winter in heat pump don't work and we use the emergency setting. We never seen much of a difference in the power bill. We run like this the whole winter a couple years back. Knock on wood it has not leaked down in the past two years. We have a friend that does our HVAC and he used a freon that has a stop leak of some sort in it or so he says but we been good for the last two years with it. so maybe it worked.

Yeah, the defrost is set for every 60 min. My aux heat is electric. I have a propane furnace, but rarely use it.
