Y'all school me on replacement of lifters on GMC 5.3L #2372892

So my 2007 GMC Sierra is sick...notorious lifter problems has potentially caught up with me at 197K miles. Knew it was coming eventually. It's still drivable, but running very rough: missing, shifting hard in gears R,1,2 & a little on 3. Code pulled today said cylinder 4 coil. Replaced that but spark plug with only 28K miles was rusted and fully corroded. Running better now than yesterday, but still rough and hard shifting. Misfire is turning off traction control and stabilitrack systems.

So....need Aldeer advice.

1. Replacement of cam & lifters (pull heads) is a big and expensive job. I've gotten one quote so far for $5,285 - GM parts and labor. Is this a typical price?

2. New engine quote was $7,800. I have no idea if that is a fair quote.

Anyone with first hand knowledge on reasonable costs?

Would you replace engine or just repair? I'm not wanting to buy a new or used truck.

In the Birmingham, Hoover, Shelby County area...give me some good auto repair shops to contact. I don't have one that I trust for big stuff...I've been fortunate to only have minor issues with vehicles over the years.

Thanks!

Man i'll have to asked my stepdad tomorrow. His 07 was done (rebuilt) probably 2 years ago. I know he didn't pay no 5 grand (not sure exact figure) though......

Have you considered an option C, a well sorted low mile junkyard motor and then do any necessary overhauling on that motor.

For the shop suggestion, I would give Hoggin a crack at it.

Those prices sound crazy...

I would call Esco Automotive if he is somewhat local to you.

Just put a brand new GM 5.3 in my cousin's 04 GMC last summer. Total cost was $5200.
My wife's 08 Silverado had to have a cam and lifters 2 years ago. That was $3000.

My first instinct was those prices were very high.

You should be able to find a reman motor for $2k-$2500. Head job (yes it better be a good one) should be less.

That seems very high - we put a Jasper remanufactured in our 96' Z71 and it's been solid. Go ahead and pay the extra for the installation kit to replace most of the older stuff on the engine. Basically, with the Jasper reman/install kit - they will reuse your intake manifold, throttle body and injectors. Assuming all the electronics are good on your vehicle, it is a pretty good deal.

3-yr/100,000 mile warranty.

Keep in mind he said parts and labor, new engines need new filters and fluids before you start them as well. Those prices are about $2k more than it should cost. Summit racing usually has the best price on gm warrantied long blocks unless one of the dealers has one they got stuck with and wanna move.

True, and I understand that. Just guessing though, R and R should take what 10 hours? Going labor rate is around $100.00 ?

All fluids and filters and misc parts around $500.00 ?

Even padding it, $2K would probably easily cover installation?

So out the door with a new motor he'd be looking at $5600.00 for a new motor installed, right? Or am I way off base?

I had my '08 replaced with a Jasper remanufactured motor for $5,300 almost four years ago.

haleyville al,
I'm not a fan of jasper engines. They have went down hill. I've seen them tore down and have 3 different size pistons. Saw one where they put the wrong head bolts in. You ever seen a head get blown off? It's not pretty. I had the pics but lost them when I got a new phone.

Rusted plugs? Sounds like a head gasket if your getting water in combustion. Pull heads and check for leaking water jacket. Also check for play in your distributor tbose brass gears wear down and but alot of slop in the ingnition timing.

When a shop starts trying to sell you a new motor its their way of saying we dont know wtf is wrong but a new engine will fix it

If you convinced its lifters take the heads to cylinder head exchange to swap out then just put the refabs back in few hundred dollars in the driveway its not that big a job

It doesn't have a distributor, not even anything that resembles where one would have been. No way possible to have any slop at all in ignition timing, nothing that would resemble it.

When some shops tell you that you need an engine it may just be because you used yours to much when it was new, I don't know if he needs an engine or not, I haven't seen the truck but I promise it ain't the distributor
