I think he's got on ghilly suit bottoms. May of had on the top as well. Probably related to whild bill. I bet this feller snuck right up to this stud buck and knocked it in the back of the head with the butt of that 30-30. Probably done it before since he didn't smile either. Funny

Good grief! Those are two fine buck deer! Congratulations to the hunters.
There’s some good looking ag land up there so no wonder Jackson ( PRV ) and Madison counties grow big bucks.

If I remember correctly there was a guy last year that shot a nice buck out of Hazel Green as well. I wonder if the genetics have been impacted by the deer that the Garrisons raised. The grandfather let them out a few times. They had a nice buck "Gojo" i think was his name that I believe he let out and they never recovered, along with a number of does.
Either way nice deer for those guys. Way to go. Yep. Gojo was his name. Had quite a few monsters. They actually got tired of dealing with the deer and just let some of them go (maybe all of them). Let some go up in PRV, too. Not sure if they were suppose to do that or not, but people probably didn't mind at the time. We had some sheds at work from some of the deer that they raised. Very very impressive sheds. They had a buck escape once and get just "wild" enough to where they couldn't catch him, but he still hung around the farm over off of W.T. Garrison... Long story short- a cousin or employee slipped off over there an "hunted" it. From what David told me the deer scored up around 200". I never seen any pictures and I think this was back in the 90's. (maybe)

You know deer don't know where property lines are. I'm convinced that many on here think they can read painted trees and No Trespassing signs but I'm pretty sure they can't.
If you want to know where the genetic influence lies look no further than our neighbor to the North. Tennessee. You honestly wouldn't think that Alabama would go purchase deer from somewhere that had big horns and bring them in? No. Not when they could always use the potential disease or low survival rate as a perfectly good excuse. Particularly when you are trying to do the least amount of work possible on the least amount of funding.
Tennessee did not take that approach but they had some help. The US Navy stocked deer at Ft Campbell from Texas and Oklahoma. TWRA stocked Chuck Swan with N. Carolina. The majority of the deer stocked along the border with Alabama were Ft. Campbell deer so genetically they are mostly Texas/Oklahoma Crossed deer. In particular the influence on Madison and Jackson would have been Franklin County, TN up and through the 1960's. They stocked a lot of deer there.
But they didn't stop there. Why would they.... Tennessee is light years ahead of Alabama as far as game management is concerned and always has been. They kept at it up through the 1980's.
At some point in the late 70's early 80's in Marion county they stocked some deer from Wisconsin. They claim there is little to no genetic influence left from the Wisconsin deer but you can decide that for yourself.
They stocked deer from Ft. Campbell around the corner to our farm on a little piece of State owned land. The first deer I ever shot was bigger than most hunters in Alabama will ever see.
It has left me jaded in some respect because there were not that many deer and the season was not open much... so when I hunted in Alabama all we saw were spikes and trash deer. And lots of hunters willing to kill them on sight. So I started my hunting life wondering.... when I see someone that has a bunch of trophies on the wall... I reflect back on my experience and the reality is.. are they that good?... or is it just a target rich environment?
Usually the latter is what I have decided.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

And when were these deer released by TN that influenced Eastern Madison and Jackson Counties? My understanding the deer in southern Franklin Co TN were influenced by Alabama deer released on Skyline , not the other way around.
Did these TN deer leap frog the Alabama deer and populate the entire county? Game and Fish has done DNA testing , I've not heard of Northern genes showing up. MOF, there are some native genes in Central Jackson Co. along the river, Chris Cook told me that himself.
The State released deer in I believe '57 on Skyline, those deer disappeared , not to be found. The state believed the whole bunch went north across the state line which was only a few miles away. There were no deer on Skyline, from Alabama or Tennessee , or anywhere else. So they did another release a few years later , those multiplied like rabbits. The first hunt they had on Skyline, a very old buck was shot that was one of the deer released by Alabama the second time.

I grew up hunting in jackson co, and ive seen some biguns but id trade that rocky mountainous baloney, for some flat land anywhere in the black belt..simply..cause i hate climbin mountains..dunit ma whole life an im bout done with it. If its next to the river or down in the valley ill play ball but other than that yall can have that place..matter o' fact yall can have north alabama, ill take somewhere where spanish moss and palmetto bottoms are..not rocks big as a bus.
