Go way back to the classics..."Where the Red Fern Grows" and "The Yearling". If you've ever read them before, it was probably in elementary or middle school, and you HAD to read them. They'll be different books, when read as an adult...

Some favorites from last year;

Killers of the flower moon
The Wright Brothers
Undaunted Courage (actually read that 20 years ago but read it again last month. Still a fascinating story.)

If any of you like the post apocalypse books, the Going Home series is great and I just started A Borrowed World series, on book 2 now. It is a pretty good series also. Both settings seem to be real world situational after an grid down scenario.

In the last few months:

Memoirs of Sergeant Bourgogne: 1812-1813
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This book is about the French retreat during that cold winter and will really make you appreciate a warm fire, a hot cup of coffee or a warm piece of crusty French bread with a pat of butter.

My Sixty Years on the Plains: Trapping, Trading, and Indian Fighting
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Unbelievable story and adventure of a young man who matures into adulthood while fighting Indians, trapping and hunting in the western frontier.

The Life of John Wesley Hardin
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

"He once shot a man for snoring too loud" I never realised that he got out of prison and became a lawyer, nor did I realize that there was an Alabama connection. A truly extraordinary character.

Buddha in Blue Jeans: An Extremely Short Zen Guide to Sitting Quietly and Being Buddha
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Ommmmmmm...

Make Your Bed
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Every young person starting out should read this. And it ain't a bad read for us older folks too. Written by a Navy Seal Admiral who just might know a little about intestinal fortitude and being successful.

Two on the Isle: A Memory of Marina Cay
https://www.amazon.com/Two-Isle-Memo..._&dpSrc=detail

Spent 2 weeks on the island of Great Camanoe overlooking Marina Cay. This book was in the library of the friend's villa we were graciously offered for the extended stay. What a wonderful adventure and a melancholy ending. One of my favorite seafaring books after "Dove" by Robin Graham.

https://www.amazon.com/Dove-Robin-L-.../dp/0060920475

While on the subject of seafaring books... Kon-Tiki should not be overlooked.

https://www.amazon.com/Kon-Tiki-Acro...words=kon+tiki

Just finished:

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson

https://www.amazon.com/Walk-Woods-Redisc...lk+in+the+woods

It's about two unlikely buddies hiking the Appalachian Trail. Some really funny stuff and some interesting observations and insights.

Currently reading:

The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself by Sean Carroll

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1101984252/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's deep but way better than I expected.

Up on deck is:

Revolution by Russell Brand

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LKJHTJU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I listened to a podcast interview with him on The Art of Charm and I was intrigued by the guy. He's a funny actor, but I never realized what a Zen Master type guy he is. He has an amazing story of how he overcame addiction. I gave my youngest daughter (who has struggled) one of his latest books on addiction in hopes that is would help her.

The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard.

It's about a South American river expedition Roosevelt went on where, among other things, he nearly died from an injury he sustained and they were often followed/hunted/tracked by a tribe of cannibals.

My brother in law told me about this one, I couldn't remember what it was.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I have a few ordered from Amazon. Maybe I can get some reading done before the semester starts.

Some good suggestions Irish. My name is John Wesley also, but I haven't shot anyone (yet) for snoring. I did a build project a few years ago for someone whose name is John Wesley Hardin. I asked him about it one time and he said "my parents have a strange sense of humor" thumbup

"He once shot a man for snoring too loud" I never realised that he got out of prison and became a lawyer, nor did I realize that there was an Alabama connection. A truly extraordinary character.

While on the subject of seafaring books... Kon-Tiki should not be overlooked.

It's deep but way better than I expected.

Up on deck is:

What's neat about that book is that we have this mental image of killer gunfighters in the Wild West as sort of illiterate, hard core badasses, but when you read this book and realize that it was actually written by John Wesley Hardin (and it is pretty eloquent for the times) and then you realize that he studied law in prison and became a lawyer after his release it changes your perception a little. I came a away from reading the book thinking of this guy more like a western version of a Ronin Samurai. Sort of a thinking man's killer.

Of course he wrote the book and in his mind all the killings were justified. grin It would seem to me that after you have to kill 20 something men, that maybe it just might be you. grin
