So I picked up a nice used Varmint 700 sps in 243 a few months ago, with my goal being 1250 yards this spring at the range.

After a little cowboy research on the sniper forums, I'm getting mixed results as to that factory offering with that 9 1/8" twist stabilizing 105 and 107 grain pills (the ones that have really good BC).

I know it will shoot the 95's (and I'm fully prepared to go that route if this fails), but I'd really like to run those heavies through there first to see if I can be one of the lucky ones to make them shoot. I know I'm going to have to push the velocity for it to have a chance...but I've yet to have the time to start developing loads. I have a scope, bases, and rings on the way, so I've got get this party started.

I was wondering if anyone on here has done the same and had success with these components? Anyone out there running 105 bergers or 107 SMKs out of a factory remmy 243? If so, and if you care to share your results and your secret recipes?

I'm gonna say no, but don't know until you try. Got a Rem 6mm and it won't stabilize 105s consistently.

Thanks for the input odocoileus... it seemed to be a 50/50 split on the LR and sniper forums. I thought at first the ones who could get them stabilized must be at high elevation, but that wasn't the case...as far as I could tell.

Anyone else have some true-to-life experience with these combinations?

Probably not, those bullets are much longer and usually require an 8 twist minimum. But all you have to do is try it, may surprise you.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Same experience as odocoileus. 6mm Rem will shoot 100g very well. I tried the 105gr Speer Hot Cores and they did ok the 105 A Maxs wouldn't stay on paper

That's interesting. I couldn't find the 105 Amaxes on paper either. This model 7 loves the 100gr Hornady BTSP, but shoots the 95gr SST into a 7" pattern. Likes the 95gr Nosler BT though.

Probably gonna have trouble, I do with a cooper in 6mm. You MIGHT could AI the cartridge and get enough speed to get the 105s to shoot.

Only 1 way to find out. Crank the velocity and see if she'll spin em.

That's exactly what I'm going to try.
