Well Ive only been Turkey hunting about 4 or 5 times but I was always with a group of 3-4 people they all have killed turkeys before. I was never lucky enough to get one with them. I still deer hunt with these guys but we lost the lease that we had turkey rights on. Now the lease we are hunting is deer only.

So any ways to get to the point I'm going to have to go at em on public land. I know thats going to be tough but hey thats part of the fun isn't it? I don't own a turkey gun all I have is a 410 and an old 16 gauge my grand pa used as a squirrel gun. If I need to I could probably borrow a turkey gun from one of my dads friends.

As far as calling goes or finding turkeys I have no idea where to start. when I went in the past i was just following those guys.

Any advice on how to find turkeys on public land would be nice.

I would suggest going and buying a 12g mossberg or remington that will be cheap enough and every man needs a decent shotgun. They are fairly cheap. Do as Yekrut suggested.
Also look on youtube at videos of people using calls.
Box calls and slate calls are easy enough to learn.
Only way your going to find them is to get out there. You will pick it up.

If given the opportunity go with a friend. We all have to start somewhere.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

I would not spend a lot of money on a gun. You might not need it for a while. It ain't turkey calling - it is turkey hunting. You have a challenge with learning on public land. Learn the basic cluck, purr, and yelp. You can get carried away listening to and repeating what you see on TV. Best of luck and when you get to the point that "the next one brings the same excitement as the second one did" you will have it figured out.

If you like where your life is at right now - work, other hobbies, marriage and other relationships - then DON'T DO IT.

a good buddy of mine, who is a diehard turkey killer, heard I was starting to get into turkey hunting....his response was "run from it like it's crystal meth". I told him it was too late. All he said was "I am so, so sorry for you."

Little did I know that 5yrs later I'd still be chasing the first one and having recurring dreams about the damn things.

Don’t do it. Take up a less stressful hobby like running with the bulls or skydiving.

I won’t tell you how many hours I logged last year hunting those birds.
Not to mention the miles and miles and miles and miles I walked chasing them.

It’s exasperating and it’s hard but it is 100% worth it to listen to the spring woods wake up and walk out with a gobbler swinging over your shoulder. Come on and join the Legion.

I think most turkey hunter look like crackheads at the end of the season. No sleep for 6 or more weeks will do that to you.

The best way to find them is walk and listen. As far as calling just remember less is more until you know what you are doing. I'm 59 and I call less and less every year and am finally starting to look like I know what I'm doing.

Thanks for the tips. I think I'm finally going to try it this year I have a small piece of property that I just got permission to deer hunt (80 acres but I can really only hunt 30 of it) The guy would let me Tirkey hunt there in sure but I have no idea if there are any birds in that area or not. The public land in thinking of going to is either Yates lake or Lowndes WMA. I've also got the corp land nearby but it's Bow only. Autauga WMA only has a 15 day season so I could try there when it's time. I will probably end up buying my own shotgun but for right now I'm probably just going to borrow one from my dads friend. I've got my grand pas old box call and 2 slate calls he owned I'll probably just use those this year.

good plan; don't over-invest until you know you've caught the addiction & disease for turkey hunting ...

Put some cracked corn and wild bird seed out with a camera and you should find out if you have turkeys.

Give it a try with as little money in as you can. And having someone who has hunted before will teach you more in a day than hunting alone can teach you in a season. Even if you are not even gonna shoot, but just come along with someone. You can also practice on non-hunting land with turkeys like state parks before or during season to learn on unpressured birds. Good luck, it is addictive. I grew up deer hunting and still love it. But given the choice I'd quit every other hobby I have to turkey hunt.

Throw out 50# of feed wheat and put a camera on it. If you dont see a turkey in a week or two, move on, you dont have any.
