I'm thinking of giving some cast iron skillets for Christmas gifts.
Questions:
1. Better to give a 10-inch or 8-inch? I'm thinking 10. Figure 12 might be too much although I haven't ruled it out.
2. Would you give a brand new one and let the recipient season it as they wish, or find used ones in an antique store and send those? Either would be fine if I got one but some folks might consider the latter as "Used, WTH?"

Clem just run up to the Lodge outlet up in South Pittsburg. I'd even look in the seconds area. I've got old and new. I'd just as soon have the new unless it was one of the better older skillets. I give a lot of Lodge 10 skillets as wedding gifts. The sectioned cornbread pan is a good gift too.

I have a cornbread wedge skillet and it is by far my favorite one to make cornbread in. Lots of little crispy wedges. Got it at lodge in pigeon forge. Man, I need some conebread now!

Go to South Pittsburg but stop at the Rest Area across the bridge on I24 and get a handful of the coupons for Lodge Outlet. Spend $10 and get a seconds 8" skillet free. I've got about 5 or more hanging in my out building from that deal.

i gave a 12" skillet to a good friend of mine who has a wife & two daughters & they sent pics cooking on it last night -- so IOW a 12" is good for families ... plan to give 10" skillets to my other friends/family -- and these are all ones i've recently restored & re-seasoned & cooked on ...
if i were buying new, i'd go Lodge - for an upscale gift, their Pro Logic line is very nice ...
