I went once this season. Saw no tracks, no scat, no rubs. 1/2 mile in into the hardwoods. however, 6 deer were checked, and I saw two does crossing the road while I was parking. I guess I wasn't in a good spot.

I've been a few times. Seen deer every time. One decent seven point but no shot with a bow.

I grew up hunting that place back in the late 70s, some great memories. Hunted a lot in buzzard roost creek bottom behind stewarts camp, killed several out of there over the years but hated dragging them back up to the road!

Well I stayed up a tree in the hardwoods til 10 without any sightings. As soon as I climbed down I heard one blowing, that's about it. Long drive for nothing, Robinhedd

Cousneddy, I imagine our paths crossed a few times then. I practically lived there from about 1978 until 1986. I was a member of West Colbert and my in-laws own property that joined the southwestern border. Good times. When I hunted the WMA (then Thomas WMA), it was mostly on the Pope Tower side.

Probably so, I did most of my hunting behind stewart camp and the gravel road right at the power line. I was later in a club that had some of the pope tower land leased, a bunch of guys from Sheffield utilities hunted there. Our lease had land on both sides of 247 and north of pope tower. It was absolutely loaded with turkey back then, could hear 10-15 birds almost every morning.

I think some of the guys I worked with at the coal transloader hunted west colbert, but that's been a long time ago!

The last time I hunted with West Colbert, they basically had zero land. They used the clubhouse to eat and sleep, then either went to the WMA or Forever Wild land. I don't even know if the club still exists. Wayne Bolton worked at the transloader. He was the president for several years.

I grew up on Coondog Cemetary road and still hunt our land up there with my dad a time or two a year. Numbers are not what they used to be at all. As a kid i would see 20 deer a day typically, now its a good day just to see der in morning and evenings. Used to steal the poachers deer when they wouldmshoot them off our land and give the old GW JD a call.

Great memories.

This is basically where I was hunting today. I've got a small spot of private ground inside the WMA.

I remember Wayne, he was a good guy. Hate to hear about the numbers being down in that area, I don't remember many hunts that I didn't see deer.
