I’ve installed several by myself over the years. I attach two ropes to the top of the stand, one on each side before I walk it up. Once I walk it up, I attach the middle brace then tie off each rope to an adjacent tree. I then carefully climb up the tree and ratchet the stand down. This is pretty much what i do. Except I don't walk it up I use the ropes to pull it up from the back. This is my technique too with one variation. I cross the two ropes at the top of the stand behind the tree I'm using and tie them off to the lower ladder on the opposite side using a trucker hitch. Then add the brace and you've got two solid enough points of contact to climb and ratchet in. IMO

I can get the rope as tight as a ratchet strap and it's a lot cheaper. I must own 30 or more ladder stands and probably 20 of them are homemade. About half are made of wood and half of conduit. I've shot a lot of deer from 10' conduit stands, and have often just carried one to the woods and hunted out of it that day. I've never had a scary moment with a ladder stand.

Id just hang a loc on and a stick ladder.same difference an way easier to do.

Buy an X-Stand......hands down the safest ladder stand on the market. Their ratchet system is pretty cool. We put up 3 of their stands this year and they seem just as stable BEFORE you actually ratchet strap it to the tree up top.

Id just hang a loc on and a stick ladder.same difference an way easier to do. They are definitely easier to hang, but I don't hang them by myself any more. Just makes it safer to have help, I tie a pullup rope on my belt, ground person ties the next section of ladder then the stand for me to pull up when ready. The main difference is some of our older (less mobile) members can no longer safely climb a stick, but can safely climb a ladder.
