Same thing Santa Claus and Christmas trees and most of the other Christmas traditions have to do with the birth of Christ. Christmas wasn't widely celebrated until the early Nineteenth century.
Wise men brought gifts to Christ. Why don't we do that today? It's good to see our kids get nice stuff, but we neglect to bring gifts to the one that is the whole reason for celebrating to start with.
JDR is correct. Most of our Christmas tradition were born out of paganism. Google some of them.

What do any of the common Christmas things have to do with him? Its mostly a Pagan celebration as far as 'traditions'.
No answer regarding the nutcrackers - perhaps came over with the Germans? Don't bother mentioning any of this because it doesn't mean a damn thing to anyone.
It is easier to fool a man than to convince him he has been fooled.

I always thought it went back to the Nutcracker ballet. Its a Christmas story.

Same as a lot of other Christmas traditions like yuletide, gingerbread houses, and the commonly accepted appearance of Santa Claus: Germany. Matter of fact, I think most of our secular Christmas traditions actually come from Germany.
I hope we have once again reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. Theres a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: as government expands, liberty contracts. Ronald Reagan

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NutcrackerNutcrackers in the form of wood carvings of a soldier, knight, king, or other profession have existed since at least the 15th century. Figurative nutcrackers are a good luck symbol in Germany, and a folk tale recounts that a puppet-maker won a nutcracking challenge by creating a doll with a mouth for a lever to crack the nuts.[3] These nutcrackers portray a person with a large mouth which the operator opens by lifting a lever in the back of the figurine. Originally one could insert a nut in the big-toothed mouth, press down and thereby crack the nut. Modern nutcrackers in this style serve mostly for decoration, mainly at Christmas time, a season of which they have long been a traditional symbol.[10] The ballet The Nutcracker derives its name from this festive holiday decoration.
