Who believes putting your hunting clothes in campfire smoke before the hunt really helps hide scent from deer? I'll be hunting a ground blind this weekend in some pretty thick stuff and don't want to get busted. Wind should be OK but may swirl.

I don't believe in any artificial smell. Introducing smells into the woods is a bad idea, and we already smell bad enough as hard as we try to be scent free. I would just play the wind, that is a sure fire way to keep the odds in your favor.

I don't always hunt the line, but when I do, I make sure I'm close to my neighbor's 8 acre bean field.

ditch the smoke idea - your ground blind is the main concern IMO ... has it been out in the woods for a while? if not, scent kill it & brush it in w/pine & cedar & get in it & hunt ... i only open as few windows as i need to shoot out of & have yet to be busted ...

Like said before play the wind . But smoke does work . If it was good enough for the injuns it's good enough for me . I like to put on my gear and stand down wind of the fire before hunting a variable wind . Make sure your "treated" aswell . Try it yourself and take your on word for it . You'll be surprised .

I've been doing it for years and I am a believer in it. Never get busted.

Wood smoke is fine. Use it. Make sure your blind is brushed well to look natural as can be.

Wear black inside the blind including a cap and mask or neck gaiter. Keep your face out of the windows and try to blend into the black interior.

I have done it before. Matter of fact I have tried just about everything you can think of over the years. What I do now is wash my clothes in baking soda and that's it. I have found I have a much better time hunting when I don't have to all that thinking. Not to mention the hundreds of dollars on the latest greatest wonder
Whatever. Do I see and kill as many deer as before? Who knows? I know I see and normally kill at least one mature buck a year and rarely get busted by playing the wind and climbing high. Sorry for the rant. To answer your question I don't think it will hurt but can't say it helps either.

I had a really good buck come in Friday and didn't offer a shot. The blinds been out for a while and the wind was good. I felt the opening was too large and my face was not completely covered. I fixed both of those and had 2 good 6 points come in 2 days later and didn't spook. I know about hunting the wind, but if you've ever sat by a campfire when the wind is slight, it switches all over the place.

Smoke works great! Firm believer. The area I hunt does controlled burns every year also which helps.

I've tried just about everything and find the best scent control or cover scent is simply playing the wind and thermals. There are other factors like humidity and temperature that effect how they smell. Just the other day at Bankhead, I had several deer come in to me at 5 yards...sitting on the ground. I've worn rubber boots and seen deer cross my scent trail and spook, blowing and causing a big scene. I've had deer cross my leather boot scent trail and not even react. I've had deer downwind of me not react while on the ground and had deer spook downwind of me being in a tree stand 30 feet up. Deer can smell better than a hound too so good luck beating their nose.
