A friend of mines buddy asked me today where I hunted on the wma. My reply...

“In the woods” laugh

He looked at me like I was crazy for not just telling him. Loose lips sink ships.

And instantly i respect you without knowing you. Good call. I had shot a turkey one morning on public land and at a gas station near by a guy dress in full turkey gear asked me if i had any luck. With the bird in my truck, i looked him right in the eye and said " didnt hear a thing, no birds around here anymore."

You have to. But I still may ask! Lol

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

I like you. You got to be a close friend of mine for me to tell you if I even saw a deer on public ground, much less where I was.

You guys are or have shitty friends. Anyone that I would call a friend, I would tell them where and when, and what I would do to kill one if I saw a good one. My friends are 100x more important than a swamp donkey.

I hunted an area one day back in the late 80's.
It was gun season so I'm almost positive I was hunting in the Tall. Nat. Forest down around the Munford area or maybe a little more south.

To this day I cannot remember where I was nor find it on the map. I had a big Nat Forest map that I had marked and it "might" still be in my mothers house but I've yet to find it.
This was when I was in the Navy and sometimes I would drive home from Charleston, SC and hunt on weekends or on leave.

Anyway, the day was rainy and pretty windy and really cold. I accidentally found this little road and drove up it a little way until it ended. All I can remember now is the road I was on came to an 3-way intersection. I took a right and spotted the road that appeared to have not been driven on in years.
I got all dressed and walked about 100 yds and was on top of a ridge, just stood there a few minutes looking around. To the East and South it dropped off, to the West went up hill about 100 yds then dropped off steep.

So I decided to walk down the East side and made a scrap probably 75 yds down the slope. Poured some doe in estrus in it, then walked back up top to where I was before.

Now this is where it get's funny. I always hunted with my .30/.30. Only that year I put a scope on it, one that allowed use of the iron sights as well. Now this was the first hunt with the scope and after it had been sighted in @ 100 yds.

So as I get back to the top of the ridge, just standing there, wind blowing hard at my back you couldn't hear a deer if it fell down and slid down the mountain lol

Standing there, and out of the corner of my left eye I noticed something move. As I turned my head left, the very first thing I saw, and this is the God honest truth, this deer was literally 20 yds from me, and neither of us had any idea the other was there. His nose was to the ground as he had followed me back up the hill.

As soon as I looked there was this deer with one of those non-typical racks, something I'm pretty sure is almost non-existent around here. It literally looked like he was carrying a bush on his head, I mean there were antlers going everywhere!

He noticed me as I turned and took off running straight ahead in the direction he was already moving.
Remember when I said this was the first hunt with that scope? I was so startled I completely forgot I could use the iron sights so I'm trying to scope him as he's hauling butt. I somehow do and shot at least 5 times and never hit him.
One shot I thought hit because at that particular shot he had turned across in front of me and as I shot he slid and turned back left and ran straight away and over the edge.

I went and looked where he slid, ground all tore up, not one sign of blood. I followed his direction and then I noticed that this area had a huge drop off and he went over it. Looked all around and never found any signs of a hit.

Sorry for the long story but the point is, if I could remember where I was I would have even shared the location back then because somehow that buck had been eating good to grown such an enormous set of antlers. And maybe someone else would get a shot/view of him.
I rarely had the opportunity to come back and hunt and that deer would have made history in this area!

The thing about public land is if one sees a big deer sometimes they call all their friends, cousins, etc. until they kill all the deer. If you want to see people swarm an area on your next hunt go shoot a rack deer and let someone see you check it in on a gun hunt. I won't go on a rant, but some people don't have respect on public land yet expect you to show respect! Could go on and on.

Pretty sure he said this guy was a friend of a friend. So no I don't blame you for not spilling the beans. Some folks kill me, especially when I get the "hey, where'd y'all kill those ducks at?"

Correct, this guy is not my buddy. Some of these guys lack reading comprehension skills grin
I will absolutely tell a few close friends where I’m hunting and what I saw on public ground but y’all are out of your mind if you would share your spot with a stranger.

Also, when turkey hunting on public land you have to be extremely cautious. Those jokers gobble and tell everybody in the world where they’re at and any turkey hunter worth his salt, including myself, is going to use any information you put out there to get on a gobbling bird.
