These are currently upstairs and the wife hates it. What would it cost to move them to the garage? Just a guess

Without seeing your house and getting measurements, that's what you'll get....
Just a guess.

You talking about rerunning the water or paying someone to move them down the stairs?

Garage floor set lower than main part of house?. I’m guessing it does so that would mean having to tie into the septic lines on the outside of the house.

What dumass had the idea to put those upstairs, in the first place?

Sounds like a time-consuming and expensive project.
I personally would leave good enough alone.

Are the bulk of the bedrooms located upstairs?
If so having the laundry up stairs and not having to tote laundry up & down stairs is a big convenience factor.

The house I grew up in it was downstairs, the house in Irvine was upstairs and I preferred that.

Too many variables Idot.. Distance from existing drains/water lines in house play a huge part in pricing.

You’re gonna have to hire a plumber and electrician at least.

Unless you got spare 220 outlets in your garage.

What would a plumber charge to run hot/cold to garage ,,,, depending on measurements and location of access ,,lets see here,,,location of hot water heater,,, if it's in your garage you're already half way there ,, my guesstimation ,, six hundred to seven hundred to place lines for washer and cut hole for dryer vent,,, run electric for the washer and dryer unless electrical outlet is already available,, if not a couple of hundred I suppose,,,,, if hot water heater is not in garage,,, ouuuuu,, add a couple of grand to that,,, total guesstimations ,,,

hot water heater in garage = $900

hot water elsewhere in home = close to $ 3000 or more

Where the water heater is in the house isn't relative to installation price. Yes, if its downstairs it just means waterlines are close but water is the easy part.. Its cheaper to get closer to an existing drain if possible

It's a WATER heater.
Hot water doesn't need to be heated.

I have thought about doing the same thing. Our washer / dryer is currently in a room that is on the opposite side of the wall from the garage. So all I would really need to do is cut the sheetrock about 4 ft on both sides of the wall and turn the fittings and dryer vent to face the opposite way they are now. Probably frame up a small room in the garage for em. Been putting it off for years.

Mine is in the garage, in a small utility room.
Only thing I don't like is going out to do the laundry, on a cold night, in my underwear.

I stand corrected ,,,it's a water heater ,,

since I left out the drain,, plumber bill goes up a little ,,, but depends on how close to existing drain or sewer line he is if you ask me.

Because that is where the washer and dryer will be.

Hot water heater is in the garage. At first, having it upstairs was awesome but then you start thinking about the potential disasters that could happen and cost thousands to repair. $900 doesn't sound bad, but 3k sounds horrible grin

The most expensive part will probably be running the drain unless there is it a drain pipe of some kind already right there. Even at that, when I did remodel work about 15 years ago, I paid a plumber around $1,200.00 to move a drain pipe in a slab about 4'-5'. They'll have to cut out the drywall to put the pipe behind it, cut the slab to put the drain pipe under it and fill it with gravel then repair concrete. The wall will have to core drilled for the pipe to go through then the yard trenched to tie into another drain pipe.

One thing to keep in mind also is even if you have drain and water close, you want to make sure the drain is properly vented..

Sure, you can dump it into the closest drain but depending on what's above it, it could pull the trap dry on the washing machine drain as something washs by it.. A toilet for instance. Last thing you want is to move all of this and then get a chit smell because its not hooked up right.

Get a plumber, not just some guy that does plumbing

Oh I forgot to add a $350 minimum for the drywall work to patch the holes that the plumber and electrician make. I assume you can repaint yourself.

Is the garage attached or detached? If its going to be a long run of water pipe and 220 is already there Id might look at just running a cold and put in a small tankless water heater.

If you have a upstairs bathroom close to being above the garage you might luck out and have a 4inch drain line and hot cold water coming up the wall you'd only need to cut out access to it and tie in
