Ok men, looking for a puppy for my son who is 9 years old. What breed would you recommend ? He's had 2 border collies, but they were just too hyper acting and got way too big for him. We've never had any animals in the house, but I think he really needs a full time friend to occupy his mind a little. I'd be willing to give it a try I guess. I want something smaller, and was wondering about maybe a wire haired Dachshund? What breed would you recommend? And what sex, Male or Female? Thanks, Robinhedd

We have had a miniature dachshund since I️ was 10 and hes been a great dog. Hes 13 years old now and gets around just fine. One of the most loving dogs ever. He is not like most dachshunds though, he doesnt have a mean bone in his body. Hes a smooth coat chocholate. We got him from a breeder in Gadsden called Backwoods Zoo Crew, but they recently just stopped breeding. My wife and I️ will be getting our first puppy from Bear Creek Minitaure Dachsunds in the next year or so. Spoke with them last week and they have a websife with all of there available pups. Dachshunds are my favorite by far

Go with a Mountain Feist. I saw a litter on SQdog central today (with papers) in central AL for $150 a pup. Didn't inquire to their location.
I have one. 24 lbs. Loves me like I was his daddy. Loves my wife and two sons (10 and 5), and plays well with all of us. He is an excellent tree dog, and will hunt his rear end off for you. He's inside while we are home, and in the pen while we are gone. Doesn't shed much, very clean and super intelligent, listens well, not very vocal unless you are trying to get him to bark while playing and of course hunting.
I could not be happier with mine.
You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

Does he want a small dog - say less than 15 lbs? If so, then the following won't apply. But, if he thinks a little bigger would be okay, then read on.
I would suggest a small standard poodle. You will find them referred to as Moyen Poodles or Klein Poodles. They are still considered Standard Poodles but are on the low end of the weight range - 30-35 lbs grown. They do not shed and have great temperaments. They can be plenty active but like to lay beside you as well (or in some cases try to lay in your lap). Males typically are a little bigger than females. You can find them in a variety of colors.
I do not have a preference on the gender, but if you are not planning to breed your dog, get it spayed or neutered. Neutering males at during the right time will prevent them from learning some of the behaviors of intact male dogs which are not real desirable in an indoor pet. And, it probably goes without saying that females will come into heat a couple times a year and you will have to be extremely diligent about keeping her away from other intact males during that time, not to mention the "mess" that you may find in the house.
If at all possible, take your son to the breeder and let the puppy "pick" him. Sometimes breeders can match a puppy to a new owner based on what characteristics the owner wants in a dog.
Since you are new to the idea of an indoor dog, get a crate. Keep the puppy in the crate any time someone is not there to watch it. Crate training is the best thing you can do for all concerned. One of mine often prefers to go into his crate and the other willingly goes when told. The crate will help tremendously with house breaking as well. But, the biggest thing it will help with is preventing a bored or anxious puppy/adult dog from tearing things up in your house.
Be aware, however, that this breed is not cheap. You will be looking at probably $500 and up for a puppy.
If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you.---Winnie the Pooh

What 'Huntress said. The Standard Poodles aren't like any of the little POS miniatures, toys, or teacups. They're intelligent, loving, SUPER even-tempered, and good companion dogs. Ours are well housebroken, they're very polite, even when I put out their food, they sit there and look at it until I tell them to eat, then they go to it! We have 4 grandchildren, from 7 years down to 9 months, the dogs are very gentle around them. Sometimes when the youngest grand is sleeping, they'll occasionally get up and go to her just to look at her and "check" on her, then go lay back down.

Two long hair daschunds here and highly recommend. Our's are 12-13 lbs and excellent all around dogs. Both are loving and loyal. The male swears I am his father. Have never owned a dog that was more loving and attached to his dad.

I certainly don't want any dog that would potentially bite. I guess I need to add that besides my 9 year old son, I also have my 12 yo daughter and a newborn baby boy! I need something that will be friendly & good for all of them. Robinhedd

The worst dog I have is a full blooded Chocolate Lab/hunting dog. I found a Boston Terrier down off the Trace by the farm, she is most appreciative and spoiled! Mutts are greta, very little expense at the vet compared to full blooded little dogs. My Veterinarian friend loves those high breeds! He and his family travel often to foreign lands thanks to those jokers.

Make yourself a checklist for your true intentions for this dog, then go from there. ANY feists or terrier is going to be prone to hyper behavior, especially the first few years. Understand the health problems for each of your top selections. If you go the full blood route, check out the breeder for health problems. If you choose a hunting breed and have intentions for hunting, then make sure the parents have hunting skills, and not just picking a breeder of a hunting dog whose dogs aren't used for hunting. If inside, shedding may be a factor. If outside, labs will chew down brick walls between 6 and 36 months if left unattended. I like well tempered British Labs, cocker Spaniels, Brittany spaniels, Boston Terriers (despite their hyperness). Golden retrievers and Irish setters are nice. And I've heard good things about golden doodles and labradoodles. We have a French bulldog that is a great pet, but hard headed at times. Bull Terriers are athletically unique and have the most interesting personalities of all the dogs I've ever owned.

Do not get a border collie unless it is going to be an actual working dog.
Mrs. Irish and I will eventually get a dog, but it won't be until our lives are to the point where we can give a dog the attention and time it deserves.
My son in law who is a big time hunter (and my daughter and grand kids too) they have always had a Labrador Retriever and they have been good dogs, good with the kids.

I'm partly on board. Partly against it.
We got a free border collie, blue heeler pup. I don't know chit about dogs. Never had one since I was young. This one snips at my kids and actually draws blood. I don't blame the dog, but that pisses me off.
I just don't know what to recommend. Heelers need to have work to do. If not they will try to round up or heel the kids and the nipping is how they do it. High energy dogs need lots of work. we got rid of one because it did the same thing and we just didn't have time to spend with it. Gave it to a cattle guy.

We have had boxers for years, extremely good dogs. Ours has been around my son since he was a 6 months old and has watched after him ever since.
I don't always hunt the line, but when I do, I make sure I'm close to my neighbor's 8 acre bean field.
