Well, I got a pretty nice buck in KY. Hunted a week with bow and then 3 days with rifle. Shot a main frame 8 with 3 stickers 3rd afternoon of rifle. Had a lot of pictures of him and went in to a small thick hardwood ridge in the area he seemed to be bedding. Both sides of the ridge had dense cedar thickets about 50 yards away he bedded in. We had a feed site further up that ridge and Id get a lot of pictures of him there. I ended up walking in and setting on the ground with a small chair and some burlap camo down the ridge where the two hollers on either side fed up into the ridge. A lot of rubs going up and down the side of the holler . It was real tight, and I could only see around 35 yards in any direction. Put out 3 scent wicks and used some Code Red estrous Doe lure. For those that dont think scents work,..we were driving the bucks crazy the last few days of archery with that same scent. Had multiple bucks running into our setups. Had one group of 3 bucks come through my set up and right to the scent wicks...then sniff around them, catch a whiff of another aldeer guy I was hunting withs (atlbravos)...and they all ran up into his too, 300 yards away and they made it to him in one minute from when they left me! They were running wide open in KY this week! One was a 120 8 point, but we both passed em all. Everyday I had bucks coming to that scent...bought for me by old foldemup from here. Thanks Casey,..great bottle of scent! So now I loaded up the scent wicks, set up with the wind blowing the scent into the one thicket and I was 35 yards above them. Around 4 pm I heard a loud grunt, but couldnt figure from where. A minute later, another coming closer. I leaned to the side and using a grunt call did a doe grunt throwing it behind me like when your turkey hunting, trying to make it sound further away. Next thing, i hear running,..and here he come! I get my rifle up in his direction and hes running up the holler thru real thick stuff coming into the scent wicks, but then got past em and caught my scent. He stopped and blew, but it was too thick to shoot..he started going back down the holler but caught the doe scent and stopped. I put his head in my scope and saw it was the buck I was looking for!..but still no shot except the head. Just as I was getting ready to head shoot him, he blew again and stuck that neck out and I took the shot. He dropped right there! Was like a turkey hunt to be honest...called him in and shot him in the neck! Nice buck, congratulations.
I don't always hunt the line, but when I do, I make sure I'm close to my neighbor's 8 acre bean field.

Congrats Phil! I know you put in a lot of hours up there. You had them figured out, it was just a matter of time before you got one of them.

Nice deer. What part of Kentucky we're you hunting? I'm in the Paducah, ky area. It's as far west as you can go before illinois. Edmonton KY, Just east of rt 65 on the Cumberland Parkway. Its a 3 1/2 hr drive from where we live. Easy to get to...some good deer. Not GREAT bucks yet, but we are working on it. We passed a bunch of nice 2 & 3 yrds,..8's, 9's even a twelve pointer who already over 120 at 2. There were only 4 bucks we felt 4 year old or better this year. Those were the only ones we trying to shoot. Great genes in the area, neighbor has a 169 3/8th, the other a 158 7/8ths they shot. Great turkey hunting as we atlbravos and I both tagged out on gobblers there too. Its not a high price lease. We spent around $1400-1500 each for the year, including food plots and 6500 pounds of corn we started putting out in Aug. We just picked up 60-80 more acres from same land owner and possibly 150 plus next door. Working on establishing great neighbor relationships. Heck, atl's buck was recovered by a neighbor for us as our access is limited. He came and picked it and us up in his side by side. real nice folks around there. That Paducah area has some great hunting by the way!

If Casey don't fill his tag up there soon can I take over for him? If he gets up there he will shoot one. He saw 4 shooters in 6 sits over 3 days with his bow. With his gun he would be tagged out already. Hes just busy elk hunting, kids, and other stuff. Im hoping he will post up a good un from there soon.

It would make a deer hunter out of him for sure! Ha, sounds like TN during the rut. Hit the horns and the grunt call and here they come. I’ve done it a ton over the years, but seriously hate shooting a deer. I used to walk around and setup and call just like turkey hunting but near a bedding area. Sometimes they would charge out looking for a fight. I guess it’s the dragging, gutting, and skinning combined with the massive amount of deer we have on the places we hunt that has ruined it for me. It’s not a challenge to go see a deer to shoot so I just lost the drive. I’ll like my son get the excitement and teach him all I know. Congrats on the great deer!

Shoot'em there and you won't have a tracking job, good deer. Thanks man. Im all about shoulder or neck shots. My old arse gets worn out from dragging long way. Atlbravos shot his buck in a DDEEEEPP arse holler! I didnt hunt there as I didnt want to DRAG one out. Plus you gotta get up 45 minutes earlier. Little did I know since I was driving..I get up 45 minu8tes earlier and STILL have to drag em out! Man, Im old but work out a lot...and it still took us from 820 am to noon just to get him up the hill out of the holler. Like bankhead..but STEEPER AND DEEPER! Next year..heck. ..Ill go there myself!~ Then we had to face a LLOOOOOOONG drag back to the road. Wouldve took 4 hours..and that am we were getting down early as I just started to get REALLY sick. Hunted in freezing and below temps with foldemup archery ...and 2 days of rain. Both the guys are younger then me ( 30 and 42 or so)...I gotta tell you...It was kickin my butt. Im too dam old for all that! ~ Luckily, atlbravos is quite the politician! We had been renting a cabin from the neighbor and meeting him and his dad since turkey season. Atlbravos and I both have been working on him, got a tour of the property..it is GREAT. 150 on one side..over 100 across the street. 5 gobblers strutting there every am..its why I knocked at his door! Luckily he came the 800 yards and picked us up in his ranger, carried the buck , us, gear and everything out...and gave us the GRAND TOUR! Nice freaking land! He showed us both sides..and hes super nice. His dad is 92! And nice as anything too. They already told us we can hunt a little. We hjust want sole rights on at least the 150! Great folks, close to home, 2 gobblers and a wall hanger for $1500??? Im good with that every year!

Thanks Brandon..but I thought youd appreciate shooting him like that. I always used to say when people asked me..what critter I enjoyed hunting the most..TURKEYS! If deer came in grunting and running to the call..Id like it a lot better..but them silly SOBs are always just sneaking around most times! Invite me up and lets go turkey hunt some rutting bucks B! Best fun Ive had in years! Atlbravios was joking, he said I should of ran up and stood on his neck!!!!

That code red sho nuff stinks!! Like a fresh pile of cow chit .I got it and some code blue , the code blue is a lot easier on the nose . I shot 130" 10 point but had to leave him overnight lost him due to an unexpected rain/sleet storm in northern IN last week . Man sorry to hear that. That sucks! Indiana has some great bucks too.

Is the code red comparable or better to the tinks? I know Terry Rohm of Tink's scent, so I wont say anything bad about it. I used to use it a lot. But for some reason that code blue and code red scents seem to work real well. If you remember I shot A real good buck 2 years ago here in Bama using the code blue. Laid down a scent trail , and literally shot him at my scent wick. Code Red is just like Code Blue but stronger smelling. It is true estrous doe urine. Also you get twice as much and I like to use a lot of scent. I drag a scent wick in and then hang it 35 yards to my side. I then put out another one 35 yards the other way and one below my stand. That way any deer coming into me where they might wind me, hits the scent 35 yards away and curls into it. Also, if they come up behind me close..my scent passes over them and they come to my scent wick below me at 5 yards or so. I had multiple bucks almost everyday come in behind me bow hunting during the rut this year..and even if they got a hint of my scent ( Im anal about scent proofing my clothes, scent proof shower, deodorant, etc so I dont put out much) they sniff and smell my doe in heat and it overcame their instinctive wariness I thought thru observing them. I used to use scent from a biolgist when I was younger (in my 20's) and Ive used scent my whole life after that. Its a big tool in my tool box like a grunt call or rattling horns. I always carry all three during the rut,..however I ONLY use scent during the pre rut, rut and post rut. Also, in Ky this year the rut was wide open. Heres an interesting story: I was sitting on the ground the morning before I killed this one...and hear a ruckus right at first light. Here they come...buck chasing a doe. She stopped at 15 yards away, he at 30.(He was a 120 inch 8 ptr I had passed on twice with a bow, and Atlbravos had as well.) The wind was in my face and I told atl..I could smell her bad. Stinkiest doe Id ever been near. And she smelt JUST like that Code Red! Like putting my nose inside the dang plastic bag I keep my drag rag in..with it in there. STINKY! So after having all those experiences just this year with it, the bucks we had coming to both our stands running wide OPEN into our scent, etc...I really like it. First year using Code Red by the way. But when Casey went to the nearest walmart he called and I told him grab that for me. Im sure glad he did.And he gave it to me as gift. Heck,..I owe that buck to ole foldememup! By the way, Chase (atl) was using Tinks 69. One day he had 8 bucks come by his set up. It was pre rut, we just started using a lot of scent, and all those bucks thought we were the first hot doe. Perfect timing.

Definitely a nice buck! I’m glad I was still in town to get to help recover him. I’ll attach a picture of the 10pt I shot the day before. The hunt was about 500 yards from the main highway up and down hollers. It was definitely rewarding to get it done and we were lucky the neighbor helped us haul him out. I hunted this spot in Turkey season and knew the terrain would funnel deer past the stand. Too darn steep any other way. I hunted it once in early season and saw 5-6 does. The PM before I shot him I went in to find a tree to climb. As I started the climb I noticed a good buck sneaking into the thicket about 200 yards away. I hurried up and got settled in hoping he would come back by before dark. I saw several does and a few young bucks that afternoon but not the big boy. I knew that he was using the hillside on the other side of the thicket as his home. The next AM I was fighting a coughing spell and was tempted to not hunt that spot anticipating I would cough the whole morning and screw it up. I decided to go for it and move down closer to the thicket where all the action was. I got settled in just at daylight and about 10 minutes later a spike came by. About an hour later a doe came by with a spike and 5 pt chasing her (same deer phil had seen less than 5 minutes before a few hundred yards away). I saw several deer that morning and a few hens as well. Phil was feeling under the weather so we were going to head back to the cabins early to rest before the pm hunt. I had just tied my rope to my gun and I hear a deer running down the hill towards me. He must have smelled my tinks as he was almost directly downwind of my stand. I flipped the gun around, gave a doe bleat and fired at about 25 yards. He ran a few yards and stopped. I wasn’t sure if I hit him so I threaded the needle between a couple of trees and piled him up. Turns out both shots hit him about 2 inches apart. Was a great hunt and my best buck to date. Look forward to next year on that lease.
