They have the players in place, he’d be able to make a big difference there a lot sooner than at UT

That could be a great hire for them. Tons of talent for him to recruit from in FL

They don’t want him at UT. I’m in East Tennessee and been watching the local sports and tonight the list was the former Tampa Bay coach that’s on Urban Myers staff at OSU and Jeremy Pruitt has expressed interest. The local Knoxville sports says Gruden is at less than 10% chance.

Let me ask you this,....

If you made $7M a year to work roughly 2 days a week, 5 months a year,...

Would you take a job to make $5M a year and work 100+ hours a week, 52 weeks a year?

I understand he was a GA there, and his wife went to school there. I don’t see that being relevant whatsoever

I agree about Gruden. Although he probably could do well with the Xs and Os, he doesn't have to put up with all the bullchit and expectations with his current gig doing the NFL games.

Works a few nights live, does some off-season work with the quarterbacks, has some other endorsements, prepping for the games, does whatever work ESPN needs on other platforms and/or shows. He stays busy but not like what it would be at UT.

Are there any examples of West Coach Head coaches making it in the SEC?

Do yall really think that most of these guys chose a career in coaching based on money alone?

I dunno, but while Gruden sounds good to the TenRc fans, it would be a horrible hire IMO.

I think some probably have, yes. They know they're going to get kicked around but the opportunity to be a head coach and sign a fat paycheck overrides sensibility.

Vandy and Missouri are good examples. Kansas is another. You know without a doubt you're going to lose. Even if you're a damned good coach, like James Franklin (now at PSU), Vandy is still going to lose. So you go take the money, say the right things, do your best and finish 7-4 or 5-6 for 2-3-4 years and then move along or get whacked and take the buyout.

Not all of them do it, but IMO it would be foolish to think all coaches are in it only because they love the game. With the crazy money being thrown around, some are looking for that payday now.

As i said in earlier post, it’s more about work load

He has the best/easiest job in football right not

He leaves his house Saturday night/Sunday morning depending on game, does some interviews, calls 16 Monday night football games a year, home by lunch on Tuesday. Private jets and limos to and from his house.

(Same as herbstriet, but less work and more pay)

Goes fishing (or insert hobby) Tuesday -Saturday

Head coach at Tennessee is 5am-midnight 365.

The fact that it is for less money is a side note

I know Gruden won a Super Bowl. But, look at his over all records. It isn't that good. I think he got out when the getting was good. He has never coached in college and doesn't have a clue about recruiting. You think Tennessee is going to be happy with a .541 winning percentage?

It's a splashy name, splashy hire, the cool hire, the "we can compete with Saban" hire.

Even though today's 18-year-olds know him mostly as a former NFL coach who is now on TV.

I'm still hoping FL (or LSU after next year) bring Mike Leach to the SEC.

I’d like mike leach at TN I think. He might be the greatest offensive mind out there right now m, but he is about 3/4 crazy.

Leach at LSU would continue their domination at the top of the heap of college football... for must watch press conferences.

I think Kelly would be an idiot to take the Florida job. No way in hell I would want Steve Spurrier sitting on my desk overseeing everything I did. More likely Frost.
I still doubt Gruden to Tennessee. More likely to be David Cutcliffe.

Or Kelly could take the job and ignore Spurrier. If he wins he can do as he likes. (Stipulations would include being competitive in SEC championship games , showing improvement and occasionally beating Alabama.) Timber, you shouldn't be afraid every time a competent coach is mentioned for a SEC opening, but there is no doubt you are. About the best even a good coach could hope for is to beat Saban 1 out of 3. I know you want all the SEC schools to hire more coaches that can't really coach but it isn't good for the SEC or Alabama for the league to be this weak. As for Tennessee, Gruden definitely isn't going there but neither is Cutcliffe. Gruden doesn't want Tennessee and Tennessee doesn't want Cutcliffe, at least not long term.

Bill I don't give a damn which coaches get hired at any school. This is just opinion/discussion. I don't know why anybody would get excited over Gruden being their new coach (which is the hot topic for them). He was a pro head coach for 4 years and was 25 wins and 31 loses during that time. Chip Kelly might be just what Florida needs, but maybe not.

Gruden was a pro head coach for 11 years...not 4. He was at Tampa for 7 years, and Oakland for 4.

My old eyes picked up Jay Gruden's record. Still no college head coaching record on Jon. It will all come to a head in a few weeks. Just like the Gus to Arkansas talk, might not be anything to it.

Spurrier is a consultant he only gives advice if he is asked. Its not like he is butting in to everything on his own.

Chip Kelly would be a terrible hire.

The logical thing for Tennessee to do is hire Kiffin.

Gruden should either go to the pros or whatever network picks up Monday Night Football.
