No excuse for a kid not to be wearing a PFD, none! Miscommunication? Observe the rules of the road! Pass on coming boats to your left just like on a highway!!!! it takes very little force to eject you from a boat.

Looking at the FWC pics at the bottom of the article, of the stratos boat after the collision, it wasnt just a tap. They hit at pretty good rate of speed. Front deck of that Stratos is crushed/cracked all the way from the top cap down to the ribs in the bottom of the hull. No excuse for not having a pfd on while a boat like that is running, or any boat for that matter. Prayers for the family.

frown sad situation that was probably 100% preventable. Prayers sent.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Definently a terrible thing. I live about 30 minutes away and fish Talquin quite a bit and know the general area where it happened at. From what I've been told by friends that know the family of the boy is that it was his uncle that he was with in the boat and they were headed to the landing so the boy could use the bathroom and that's when the accident happened. Also from what I've been told is that he had just bought the boat and Saturday was their first time taking it out so I'm kinda wondering if he might not have known exactly what to do when meeting another boat head on. The only reason I say that is because I also know the other group of people that were in a bass boat that was involved in the accident and they have spent their whole lives in bass boats fishing tournaments all over.

five days to find that boy in a LAKE is damned outrageous, he should of been found the first or second day. It ain't rocket science, he was laying on the bottom right where he went in the water.

Prayers for the family.

Terrible tragedy. I was thinking about the recovery effort. If several boats with DI/SI could be lined up side by side, maybe 50 feet apart, and idle along while doing a grid search I would think that a body could be spotted in a very short time. Getting folks with boats equipped that way that are also willing to participate might be the problem.

thinking way too hard Wiley, weighted treble hook and 20 feet of line. He did not move, he sank right where he went in. I'll bet a case of beer I could of found that boy in two hours if someone showed me the wreck site. Been there , done that, and got the t-shirt.

haleyville al,
It took over a week for them to find the guy on upper bear this year. A fisherman actually found him. They claimed they knew where he was but the divers wouldn't go him because he was hung under a old bridge.

I'm still wondering what happened. They said a miss communication caused the incident.

Dog alerted on a scent yesterday, searchers went back to location this morning and they found him. Same spot where the accident occurred, the family at least has some closure.

This just came off BBC board. Championman posted it.

"same spot where the accident occurred" every....damn...time.

I have seen searchers go hundreds of yards away from the drowning site to look, I have never understood this "search pattern". People sink straight down and move very little, even in a river and current. In a lake they never move.

Troy,
How many recoveries have you participated in over all your years as a GW? I've helped with some SAR for lost boaters/hunters in the delta in Mobile back when I lived in Saraland. Actually helped ferry some survivors back to shore when that Amtrak train derailed in Bayou Canot probably 25 yrs ago now. Access to the site was boat only. Lotta locals with bassboats helped get most of those people back to shore.

Have you ever been the boat to recover a body? I haven't. It would have to be a strange feeling to actually bring the body up. Happy that you were successful and able to help bring closure to the family but also kind of morbid and depressing at the same time. Especially if it was a child was involved.

I've always heard the same thing, from the older SAR guys with a lot of experience. They would always say, if you can find the exact location the victim went over, they will be on the bottom within that 20x20 ft area.

From what I've been told the people that hit the boat the boy was in were heading at them and waved in the direction they were going and the only thing I can figure is the driver of the boat with the boy in it must have thought they meant for him to go that way and that's when they both went the same way and hit but I'm just guessing so please don't quote me.

I was in one half dozen recoveries over the years. One at Lake Payne where a black teen swam after an errant beach ball, well he swam like a brick and drowned in seven foot of water. Lord at the wailing when he came out of the water. Lesson learned....

At Lock Eight a bunch of local blacks overturned a jonboat and one went down in the slough directly in front of the boat ramp, maybe 40 yards out. Rescue squads looked all day for him, some as far as 1/2 MILE from where he sank. Late that afternoon my partner got his boat and I got one of the survivors to throw a rock to where they turned over. It took me maybe ten minutes to snag his pants leg with my hook. He was EXACTLY where he went down. I pulled him ALMOST to the surface and quietly called the High Sheriff over and gave him the line. I told him to wait till he got loaded and headed out to announce he had found him....because there were 300 local blacks lining the bank and I knew what was going to happen.

My dog Taz tracked and alerted on the river bank where a teenager had gone in, divers brought him up right under where Taz had alerted and I told the Sheriff where he was.

I did CPR on a drowning victim from below Lock Seven dam. Prolly for 15 minutes before ambulance from Eutaw got there. Damn near killed me. The victim didn't make it due to severe head trauma from hitting the rocks in the overflow boil. Worst thing I ever did was take my boat to the sandbar across from Jennings Ferry to find his wife and take her to the small Eutaw hospital. Remember it like it was yesterday.

so , yes, I have been on a few. Not a good thing at all.

the more I think about that boy not wearing a lifejacket, the madder it makes me. My grandson is eleven and I cannot comprehend the amount of stupidity involved in some grownup not making sure he had one on and on properly. It would of taken all of ten seconds to keep that boy alive. Damnitt.
