In the market for a new 50HP engine for my boat. Trying to decide between a 4-stroke or another 2-stroke engine. Planning to go with another Tohatsu since I've had such good luck with them over the past 30 years...

Any experience with a 4-stroke or recommendations/reason for one or the other? Appreciate any helpful info!

Both have pros & cons. For <100 hp I like the 2 strokes. They are lighter, much easier to fix and do the services yourself. The 4 strokes seem to be more reliable, more fuel efficient, no oil mixing but are heavier and more expensive and take more experience to work on or service. E-Tecs are almost a hybrid as far as performance from what I can tell on my bigger boat.

I should have added that most 2 strokes are louder and smoke more. My 60hp is relatively quiet and doesn't smoke much at all.

I am a 2 stroke guy. I have a 2 stroke Merc and love the power out of the hole. Not bad on oil or gas. My buddy has a 4 stroke Merc on his new boat and that thing can't get out of it's own way. He wish he had a 2 stroke

I love my pro-xs but my next motor will likely be a repower in 4-5 years hopefully and it will be whatever has the best warranty at that time.

I just looked up Tohatsu motors since I'm unfamiliar with them. The weight difference between a 50 hoss 2 and 4 stroke is 6 lbs.

I'd go 4 stroke

I got a 60 hp 4 stroke merc on my boat and really like it. Very good on fuel and my 17' boat will run about 34 mph which is plenty quick for me.

New = 4 stroke

My Honda 30 had more out of the hole and torqe than any 2 stroke I ever had.

I was a 2 stroke for life guy until I got my first 4 stroke.

Took the my boat out yesterday for the maiden voyage with the new Tohastu 50hp, 4-stroke to start the engine break-in. 1st 2 hours could only run it up to 3k RPM. Even at 3k it pushed my boat nearly as fast as my old 2-stroke did at WOT. Power trim on the tiller motor is AWESOME! After the 2-hr mark I could take it up to 4.5k but the best I could get was ~4.1K. Too much prop. Going to drop back to a 13-pitch and see how that does... So far, very happy with everything but the sticker price!
