When hunting mountainous areas I have always set up near the top of the ridge close to draws .I was wondering if I should be hunting the shady side or the side that gets the most sun.

Do you hunt the mountains of Pelham?

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Have to read up on thermal winds to answer that question. Someone should have good advice shortly.

Sun at your back. Higher in the morning. Lower in the afternoon. Wind blows all directions near gullys. .02

I have a hollow I hunt but I normally only hunt it in the mornings so the thermals help with scent control but I have sat there and seen the wind blow left to right at the stand site and 100 yards away be blowing right to left.

When it's a cold , sunny AM, hunt south faces. I've never liked hunting down in the bottoms of hollows.

Warm days hunt the north side for less sun. On cold days hunt south side for warmth. But wind direction is also important.

Watch dan infalt . In the afternoon hunt the bottom of the ridges and cause the deer will feed on the top of the ridge if the wind is coming from the ridge side what I have seen the deer have been feeding with the wind at there backs while they are looking down the ridge

I don't think which side matters as much you'll just have to figure out where they want come up from down below. Best is just figure our where they want to go and may take a time or two hunting to see it. I would take note of all the steep places around the tops of the ridge and hunt where it was easier for them to come up and either cross over or go on out the top. They are like cows they will take the easiest path.

I pretty much exclusively hunt on public land and I always get annoyed to see after identifying good looking ridges and pinch points on the topo map that almost every single one has a logging road or some kind of path going right along the top.

does the time of day influence the direction they're going? as in do they tend to go up the ridges into the pines from the hardwood bottoms in the afternoons and then back down in the morning, or vice-versa? Or is it just depending on the specific deer in the area you're hunting
