Well boys here we go. I'll be hunting ga, ok, and la. Just moved back to Louisiana with a new job so not sure how much I'll get to hunt here. Got a week planned in Georgia during the rut on family land and hunting my stepdad buddies land in oklahoma.

Haha, yeah right. Only way it'll happen is if the good Lord keeps sending 'em my way. thumbup Jon, where's your new club located? Closer to B'ham? Hope it's close, but it can't be as short of a drive as you had last year. grin

I'll be hunting Fort Campbell, KY - Fort Knox, KY - Redstone Arsenal, AL - and possibly a couple of private clubs here in Bama as a guest. This year will be my first time to be on Fort Campbell, so I'm not real sure what to expect there. Hopes are high though.

Definitely not as close as last year, but I do have a spot close to my house where I got permission to bow hunt. Can’t wait for Saturday!

On a different note, knock on wood, but I think this is a going to be a good season. I've already seen more than half of the deer numbers I saw last year, in the first 2 days of season.

My place is in Russell County. Probably hunt with some buddies in Montgomery and Macon Co a few times as well. Good luck to everyone!

Meat Sweats is good with me too

Well I had planned to be on Fort Campbell tomorrow morning, but they decided to close the whole place down for hunting for the next week... frown So much for that. Hopefully I'll get up there next weekend.

Regarding a team name... "Tied off" - not sure I understand the meaning behind Meat Sweats. Please explain, since deer don't sweat. wink

When you eat so much meat that your body doesn't know what to do with all the protein, you get the meat sweats. I believe your daughter was on the choir tour where it was a running joke because we ate at one of those brazilian steak house places where you get unlimited meat.

Well in that case let's go with it.

It's been too long since I've been at a Brazilian steakhouse.....

AUwrestler, I started undergrad at Auburn in 2009 so I’m just a little bit behind you. Give me a shout when you come down and if we can make it happen I’ll take you to my place. I just had my first kid about a month ago so I’m not sure how much I’ll get to hunt this year, but I’m hoping to get out there a decent bit.

First hunt of the year this afternoon. It’s hot but I’ve seen 4 already. We are buck only so I’m hoping something good shows up.

Have we figured a name. Bout time to let the world know about us. And Claims rep. Does the quote in your tag say, "if you want peace, prepare for war"?

very good. I work at the VA in huntsville, so I get to serve the veterans daily too.
Can we message Yekrut and tell him a name? Meat sweats has most votes so far.

Congrats Jon! Rage in the cage!!!

Fella’s, I was supposed to be on Fort Campbell in the morning, hunting there Th-Sat. But the powers-that-be decided to close the base to hunting (it is after all an active military base and not a hunting preserve! rofl ). Anyway, I’ll be on Redstone Arsenal instead. Hope I’ll catch a buck with his guard down around 0715 tomorrow! thumbup

I just got my permit to hunt Redstone. I'm going to try and go Friday after I get off mids at 7am... hopefully be in a tree no later then 8. Wasn't able to scout so I'm going to just pick a spot a run with it.

Also, I'm new to this forum so I'm trying to find people who are hunting similar land.

Anyways, Good luck today!

Here she is. 101 lb doe. Shot her yesterday afternoon and had 3 racked bucks come out a few minutes later. Wish I could have got a shot at either of the bigger two, but unfortunately they were a little too far. One of em whipped up on the other one and then chased him out of the field. Still a fun afternoon

I'll be headed to Georgia the 5th-12th and will be in the stand everyday pretty much all day. Then the day after thanksgiving heading to Oklahoma to hunt with my stepdad buddy who owns 2300 acres and has superbly managed his place for over 30 years. Chances of killing a stud there are very high.

Next sun I leave for Georgia and I know I can at least kill a doe there. We got a few deer on cam there but nothing I would put on the wall. Had a freaking giant but he broke of all of one side except about 5in coming out the top of his head.

No deer movement today. Rain is supposed to stop at 0500 tomorrow, and it’ll be 36°. Deer should move. Good luck to y’all who are hunting tomorrow.

Saw a doe on the church campout with my daughter. Counting it as the first deer sighting this year cause it was in the woods, and i was in camo.

I ended up seeing four deer total Saturday. At 0840 I had a buck spot me (had no idea he was there until he blew), then he took off. Big-bodied buck, looked like a 135” or so 8 pt. No shot. Then saw a doe at 1000 and she was in a hurry, but no male courters were following. I moved stands at lunch, and had two non-shooter bucks move thru at 1pm. And of course one of the non-shooters loitered right in front of me for about 10 minutes. No deer after that.

Then last night I didn’t get an area assignment before they all filled up, so I was done hunting. I drove home late last night - got home around 12:30am or so.

I hope to head back up to Fort Campbell around Vet. Day weekend.

Alright fella's, I'm headed to Fort Knox tomorrow and will be bow hunting Wednesday thru Monday of next week. I know the bucks have been cruising, chasing does, and responding to calling. That said, the weather is going the wrong direction but there's nothing I can do about that. Rain is in the forecast too... Here's to hoping the good Lord has mercy on me and sends an old senile buck my way that is blind and has a head cold! rofl

I'll do my best to post updates when I can. Cell service is spotty up there, and the campground also has bad service. Good luck to all of y'all who hunt this week! thumbup

Woke up to rain here in KY this morning. I’m at my spot, and am waiting on a big rain cell to pass thru before I head to the ridge I’ve got mapped out. Looks like by mid-morning the rain will be through here for most of today. Tomorrow the rain chances are low, but Friday is a wash out (according to forecast). I’ll be posting in the LFTT thread if I have coverage up on the ridge.

Wish I could help, but it’s been a long time since I’ve hunted either place. Both hold deer though.

Apparently skyline hasnt planted green fields yet. They are all just tilled dirt

That’s a bummer but I’ve seen a pile of deer walking through freshly tilled dirt before. Checking it for new growth and tender shoots coming up. Good luck

Well guys I came home from Fort Knox with an empty truck bed. My best opportunity was Wednesday morning (my first sit on Knox).

Here’s a text I sent to a buddy telling him happened Wednesday morning : “Almost closed the deal yesterday morning at 1050 right after the rain stopped. I had a stud chocolate rack 10 Point at 22 yards and had no shot. He started to walk away and I stopped him with a grunt. He wouldn’t come in, so I snort-wheezed at him. He finally did turn, but went right back in the thick stuff where he came from. I needed 2-3 more steps and he’d have gotten a ride to Alabama.”

So Wed. morning was my best chance. Th. I didn’t see any deer at all. Fr. I saw a small 8 pt. that was a non-shooter. Saturday I walked in almost 600 yards to a new spot. On the walk out I jumped a bunch of deer, had no shot, etc. Learned from that that I walked in way too far. Lesson learned for next time. Sunday morning I had a big buck come right under my stand, but he was totally missing his left beam (his pic is below). If he’d matched he would’ve been a shooter for sure.

The weather up there was terrible for deer hunting. Low temps were in the upper 50’s, and highs were upper 70’s. Just terrible deer hunting weather. Given the temps, I guess I should just be glad I saw deer at all.

Bummer about the weather! Good you still saw deer though!

I checked my camera for the first time on a small piece of property I got permission to hunt. I have some pretty nice bucks coming in, making me excited for the rut. Going to be hard to stay out of there but I'm going to make myself do it.

Good job jdfarms, and congrats on the deer sightings claims. I have yet to see a deer from the stand. Going veterans day for my first all day hunt at the new club. Will shoot anything legal.

Well I shot an 8pt yesterday morning. Killed by mistake. 3.5 yr old 15in wide deer. I was hunting a cutover and only caught glimpses of him running a doe. Left phone at house so didn't get any pics. Was pretty disgusted with myself. Saw 19 yesterday pm all does and yearlings and 8 so far this am. Two small bucks an 8 and a 6 and rest does and yearlings.

Still up here but since last post saw another 6 pt running a doe. They went down in a big bottom and when they come back out it was the 6 pt doe and the target buck. Target buck ran 6 pt off and he never checked up chasing doe. He stopped twice and was behind trees both times so I never got a shot. Gone sit til 10 then get down. Got to go run some errands. Supposed to be mid 80s today so doubtful about this evening hunt.

Hey JDfarms, im headed to auburn for Thanksgiving and will be able to hunt Wed the 22nd afternoon. But my wife doesnt trust you. She thinks you are a 16 year old girl pretending to be a man on a hunting site, in order to lure older men to your trap. I showed her your pic and post and she thinks you arr just committed to the lie. Ill update closer to time.

Good luck guys. Looks I won't be able to hunt for a while, unless I get a free morning to sneak up to a small place I have to hunt close to the house. Some bozo youth minister scheduled a fall retreat in the middle of deer season....oops.....

Next time get us some pics Clark, we need the points! Congrats on the buck, even if it wasn’t what you were hoping for.

Auwrestler, that’s pretty funny. Tell her if you’re real lucky I’ll be an 18 year old girl who loves to hunt b/c she loves meat.. And it’s fine if you can’t go, definitely understand. We might already be gone to my inlaws by the 22nd anyways, but I will do my best to take you if we can work it out.

Hopefully this cooler weather coming in Will get them moving and we can knock a few down these next few weeks. Picking up the gun next weekend should help our chances too

Well Campbell kicked my butt this trip/season. I got on some deer yesterday afternoon and thought I’d slip back in there and slay one of em this morning. I never even saw a deer today. frown The crazy thing about it is i heard shooting literally all around me all morning. Yesterday a buddy of mine and his son were in the same area that i was in, and his boy killed a stud 9 pt (for sure wallhanger). This morning (in a different area) another guy i know killed a GIANT 8 pt - it had 12”+ G2’s. Just a massive buck. So they are there, but i just missed out on em.

Next weekend I’m back up on Fort Knox for their quota gun hunts. I’ll be hunting an area that has been closed since last season, so hopefully there’ll be a big un waiting on me in there.

No didn't fall put of tree. Was wrestling with little brother and slipped and fell. Fractured skull right behind ear which is causing lots of problems with ear and chewing

Man that sucks. Praying you heal up soon and everything is good.

Hunted some new land on Keel Mountain today, saw 8 deer but no shots, then they winded me. Of course came from a place I never would have expected. This is going to be my new "when I'm visiting family" hunting place, so I'll really only hunt it a couple of more times.

Tough luck Clark, hope you get healed up and back out there soon.

I hunted this last weekend, but was trying to get my brother in law his first buck instead of shooting one myself. We saw 14 Friday afternoon and he killed a big cowhorn spike. Saturday morning we got skunked from the stand, but saw 5 bucks on the way out and a couple of them were pretty good. Got an idea where I’m gonna be the next time I get out there

Just called redstone arsenal, with my new job at the VA, i should be able to hunt. I know Claims hunts there. What do I need to know, how much huntable land is there?

Fort Knox or bust! I’m headed out tonight after my daughters basketball game. This’ll be my best (and probably last) chancecto kill a good buck in KY this season. Tomorrow the weather will be terrible - no other way to put it. Sunday it’ll be just the opposite. Here’s to hoping the good Lord sends one my way!

Good luck to all of you this weekend. thumbup Sure would be nice if 3-5 of us were to kill some racked bucks in the next couple days.

Good luck Claims. It’s looking like I may get to go a time or two this weekend or early next week. Haven’t had the time to do much scouting, maybe I’ll get lucky. Plenty of season left. I should be good for a nice buck at some point this year.

I am back in louisiana and hit two Dr. Appts tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get cleared to go back to work and everything. My stepdad and I are supposed to leave thanksgiving day to head to his buddies place in Oklahoma but unless something changes or I make a 180 i may not be going.

Fort Knox was a bust for me. I saw a bunch of deer, including one 150"+ stud, but he was wide open after a doe, 125 yards away through the woods, and across a big creek in a different hunting area than what I was in. I may head back up there in December, and again I may be done with KY for the year. Just have to wait and see on that.

Another morning hunt and no deer sighted. That brings my total to 0 for deer seen while hunting. Did see 4 does on the road side, closest ive ever come to getting out the truck and shooting one.

Haha dang auwrestler, keep paying your dues and it’ll pay off. Time in the stand beats time at work or school any day. I saw 3 this past Sunday morning, nothing good enough to shoot, and haven’t been yet this week. Hoping to get out there soon, I’ve killed most of my bucks the first two weeks of gun season or either in January. And i don’t feel like waiting til January!

Congrats claims. I am in Oklahoma and will be here hunting through sun. Hopefully I'm lucky enough to put one on the ground. We were looking at some trailcam pics tonight and all I can say is wow. This friend of my stepdad has been on his a game for managing deer. He s got several deer 170+ and a few truck loads of 130+ deer. Bad thing is, unless it's a cull, bucks have to be 150 or better and 5.5 yrs old. He s got a few culls that are in the upper 140s that I would love to shoot. He told us to shoot whatever made us happy within his guidelines but it seems he has definitely been pushing culls. I'm just thankful I'm here and able to hunt. If it's meant for me to kill one I will and if not I won't. He does have a 10 that I would die to kill. It's a 5.5 yr old deer thst is probably mid 170s and perfectly symmetrical with 12-13in g2s, 10-11in g3s, prolly 8in g4s, and 7-8in browtines. Bucks prolly close to 20in wide and has 24-26in main beams. Decently heavy but not super massive. All in all a deer I would love to kill.

Well fella’s, I totally struck out in Kentucky this season. Five trips up there, only saw one racked buck (he was a good one for sure) but he didn’t give me the extra three steps I needed to let the Matthews eat... frown After that I never had a racked buck in my sights. Sucks, but that’s hunting. I don’t really expect much between now and MLK day, but who knows - that’s why it’s called hunting, right?!?

Bummer claims!

I'm still seeing more deer than ever. Have plenty of great bucks on camera, just gotta see them in the daylight now.

My season is pretty much over. Unless ingst an invite from a buddy here in Louisiana I'm done. The place I hunted in Oklahoma had some nice deer just wouldn't cooperate in daylight. Did see a 140ish in 10pt thst was 2.5 and couldn't shoot him. Only other shooter I saw was the art am I hunted and I just caught glimpses of him running a doe.

Im going hunting in bankhead at least saturday afternoon and Sunday. Hoping to have some luck. Trying to decide if its worth missing a duck hunt to hunt saturday morning for deer.

I’ve taken the past few weeks off from hunting and been working instead now that I’m out of school til January. After shooting those 2 does in bow season, I’m buck hunting from here on out unless somebody asks me to shoot a doe for them. I’m getting back out there for a few hunts this weekend since it’s gonna be cold. Let’s hope something good steps out. I’ve got a few spots I’ve been keeping in my back pocket for weekends like this,

I’ve also taken some time off - my last hunt was 11/26. I’ll be back out there in the morning. Maybe I’ll catch one cruising through. Good luck fellas!

Due to the cold, ill be headed to skyline saturday afternoon and all day sunday.looking at a map an looking at the steepest place that other hunters might not want to go, but the deer will. Heres to not skipping leg day.

Another hunt, and my record of zero deer seen is still rolling. I did find a matching set of sheds.

I've seen deer before in Skyline, but never a good buck. Killed one doe out there after that new tract opened up, and have never been back.

I struck out this weekend on RSA, and got a head cold to boot. I hate being sick. This is gonna be a long week at work.

Well, i didn’t pull the trigger this weekend either. Saw the most deer I’ve seen all year Saturday afternoon, 22 total and one was a real nice 3 yr old 12 point. Sunday morning was a bust, only saw one doe. Hoping to get back out there soon. Good luck to y’all!

My deer sightings have come to a halt, but still have some nice ones on camera so I'm not worried. I really haven't been hunting much. My semester ends Wednesday and am off work next week for most of the week, should be seeing some rutting activity.

Saw 6 more on Tuesday afternoon, 3 bucks. Nothing to shoot. Still seeing plenty of deer but the mature bucks i was seeing in bow season have disappeared. Gonna change strategies and hunt the thick stuff on the back 40 until they start cruising/chasing in January.

Well fella's I’m having a tough stretch of hunting. Last Saturday I had a guy shoot an 8 pt about 200 yards from me before the deer got to me. I got to watch from my stand while he finished it off, field dress if, and then drag it off. Saw three more, but no shooters.

I hunted again this morning, but didn’t see any deer at all today. I’m slightly burned out from the five trips to KY, which all resulted in a big goose egg. But I did get the one doe Thanksgiving morning - she was 100 lbs. field dressed.

I’ll be hunting again next Friday and Saturday. Hope all of y’all are doing well, and have plans for some good family time during Christmas.

God bless!

Im done till january, im in process of buying some land and should close by january 1, just in time. Some big deer have been killed off of it in the past. But noone has been on the property since thanksgiving when I walked it. Should be covered up from all the surrounding pressure. I have painted the bathroom and trimmed the bush, and participated in all holiday events for several days of hunting the rut.

I'm pretty much done till January too. We had to put in our vacation requests two months ago, and I had taken yesterday and today off and its been super high winds and heavy rain, so I haven't actually hunted. Maybe this afternoon, but it's going to be 70 degrees. I'm off work the week after Christmas, but I'll be up in Huntsville, the opposite direction of my hunting club.

I’m thankful to the good Lord above for a great day in the woods. I shot a coyote at 1:30pm this afternoon, then had this 8 pt. come thru at 3:20pm. He weighed 140 lbs. field dressed. Glad to get them both. thumbup I’m off next Th. and Fr., so I’ll prob be back in the woods then. Definitely next Saturday too.

I’ll be out there this weekend too. Bucks are on their feet at our place. My brother killed a 210 lb, 7pt a couple days ago and has seen several 115-125” deer chasing does the past few days

Got another doe this morning and then some more points this afternoon. Killed a pretty solid 7 or 8 point. Haven’t measured him yet.

I’m hunting some rarely available areas tomorrow on RSA, and have high hopes for a stud to walk by. Maybe it’ll happen!

Good luck to all of y’all tomorrow! Let’s kill some bucks!!

I couldnt be more disdappointed. been saving a spot all year, has great winetr wheat growing and saw zero deer. this is after I walked a half mile with my climber through the river bottom in order to no thorw my scent into the bedding area. and to boot, after I climbed down after 5. a deer starts blowing at me. that deer that I never saw, but blew 5-6 times is the closest I have been to a deer hunting this year. I'm done till the 16th.
also heard a gun shot on RSA, was that you claims?

I did manage to put another 8 pt. on the ground this evening. I got him with 3 minutes of legal shooting time left. Very thankful to the good Lord for another nice buck. He weighed 131 lbs. field dressed.

Awesome. Congrats Claims. They were on their feet this weekend! My dad dropped a stud of a 7 pt yesterday afternoon, so that’s 2 less bucks running on our place after this weekend. Hopefully I’ll get on another good one before the season is out!

So who’s been hunting in these extreme cold temps? I haven’t hunted since last Sat - the day before the cold temps got here. I’m off work today, but I decided to lay off this morning - full moon last night + 15° Gave me little confidence I’d see one. I will be getting in the woods around 1pm today, and hope to catch some deer moving in the last hour of the day. We’ll see how that works out.

Good luck fella’s.

I ended up not going today due to some work that needed to get done around the house. Tomorrow is a different story though - gonna be in a real good spot on RSA that doesn’t get hunted a lot. If the good Lord allows it I’ll tag out tomorrow. thumbup

Good luck to y’all if you go.

Went new years day saw nothing again, walked over 2 miles on gated road on skyline. Ill be taking a couple afternoons next week to try and get it done. Buddy killed a spike on a green field at the club that had 4 others with it. And hoping to have the attorney to call me to close on some land Im buying. Looked at this land first weekend in dec and still havent closed. I HATE lawyers and banks.

I’ve been once in the past week. Saw a few does and a bunch of little bucks harassing them. Had a young 8 pt running a doe all afternoon though so it should be close to kicking off. Y’all having any luck or seeing any sign of chasing?

I got us a 4 point to put up rofl

I thought it was a doe, was with two other does in the thick stuff. Was bowhunting, losing light, decided to take the shot. It grew antlers by the time I got there grin

Was kind of bummed but at the same time, it was my first buck ever, and with a bow, so that was exciting to me. Next time, I'll check closer laugh

It finally happened and I couldnt be happier. Signed for my first land purchase last friday and went on my first hunt yesterday. I had planned to sit all day. But didnt need to. The property is a mountain side so early morning i packed my climber as light as possible and stripped down to just a tshirt and hiked to the very top. Found a good tree where I could see the bench above a below me ans settled in. Around 815, saw movement above me looked through my binos and saw a big deer and antlers. He was walking away from me and i lost him through the limbs. So.i used my grunt and doe bleat can and waited while crouched in my stand. Not a minute later he had circled down to the bench I was on and walking right at me. My elbow tapped my pack when he was 30 yardsaway and his head popped up and thats where he stayed. Dropped him right there. Hes my second best buck and feels great to kill a good buck on the first hunt on my own land. Thanks guys. If someone can post pictures for me id appreciate. Also need to get him on our score board.
