So I've struck out on a few different bullets in my 280 ai and was wondering if anyone is shooting the following and if so would you be willing to send me a "sample pack". 150 ballistic tips, 139 Barnes lrx(or alternatively 140ttsx, maybe even 120s), and 140 gr partitions. Naturally I'd be willing to return the favor by sending what bullets I have which include 140 bergers and 162 eldx.

Buying whole boxes is starting to get expensive so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jon

I believe I have the 150 BT's and 140 Partitions.

There are some places you can buy sample packs of bullets. Walter Craigs in Montgomery has some sample packs and you can probably find some online.

PM me if you are interested in what I have.

I did do a quick check online. Seems there was a company named bullet proof samples that doesn't have anything available anymore. I'll shoot you a pm tomorrow.

No this one is semi custom by Gallagher firearms in Jasper. I never did try the ttsx’s but settled on the 140 gr accubonds. You are the second person I’ve heard say that the 280 ai like the 140 ttsx.

I already loaded the 140s! I’m done trying bullets in this gun, lol. It has been a pain.

How much have you worked with powder charges?

My 280 Rem. went from 3" groups with a SSTs to 3/4" with a grain of powder difference.

I don't want to come off as a know-it-all. But, I initially wanted to reply the same to this post when asking for a sample of various bullets.... There is no way I could determine if the bullet should shoot in the gun at anything less than a box... maybe 2 boxes of bullets. I usually pick the 1-3 bullets I want to shoot first and commit. Usually one is a Sierra because if the gun will shoot it will shoot a Sierra 100% of the time in my opinion. I may intend on shooting an Accubond or something else in the end... but if there is a question about the capability of the gun that is how I rule that out. Sierra's are my best friend in that regard. Think ok, now the gun will shoot and likes 140's. Let's try some.... Barnes/Nosler/Hornady, whatever next. Now I'm getting down into the more expensive 50 per box bullets. But I have confirmed the rifle is capable.

A box of 50... that's one box of ammo worked up...that's 10 different loads @ 5 each... That's not even scratching the surface to me. No problem for me to go to the range with 2-4 boxes at a time loaded if I got time to stay a while and keep the barrel cool.

You've made a good point Goat. Sierra bullets aren't "sexy" because the do not have plastic tips, not bonded and the BC's are not as high as the newer long range bullets. But they will typically shoot well and can shred a deer's innards. Just avoid the shoulders at high velocities and you shouldn't have any problems.

I have a 264 Winchester magnum I bought earlier this year that is being a problem child. Tried 5 different sexy bullets and powders and the best group I've had is 1". The rest of my groups have all been 1-1/2" or larger. Finally bought the Sierra 140 game kings last week but haven't had a chance to shoot. If the gun will not shoot the sierras, I'll look into a custom barrel. Too pretty not to keep it but it's gotta shoot good to keep my interest.

BTW, I am the one who donated the bullets to jonlee for testing. He sent me pictures and gun shoots 140 grain Nosler AB's and partitions very good.

Nothing is my way or the highway but that is how we've always done it. That pre-dates me. So we are talking like back into the 50's here. I could make a more compelling argument but I'd have to digitally scan several filing cabinets full of load data. You'll have to take my word for it.

Shoot deer with whatever you want my bullet stash is well rounded. A little bit of everything. But when I sit down with a new rifle there are always some Sierra in there to try. It is a confidence thing more than anything else. If the gun is going to shoot it will shoot them.

Most of the time that translates into a whole lot fewer of the expensive bullets when working up a load. Usually if you have some variety at that point between 1-2 even 3 premium bullets you'd rather shoot... you'll be very close with only some minor adjustments .

I guess I have just gotten lucky. Because I just have always gotten my go to long range bullet and it has always worked. Typically with multiple powder charges.

Only accurate rifles are interesting.

Well that being said sometimes I do the same. If I am dead set on a bullet I'd prefer to shoot in the gun most of the time I can get it dialed in with powders. I use to be that way with Nosler's 162 solid base in 7mm. Those were my go-to when they still made them.

When you start getting down to the 1/2's then 1/4's difference in group size is when you start burning lots of powder and bullets combinations.

In no way is that necessary for your typical deer rifle.

AU338, if that is an older 264 I'd have a smith look at the throat erosion. The 264 gets a reputation as a barrel burner but I think that was due to early chambers being cut with sloppy throats. Obviously a high velocity cartridge is going to wear quicker than a 22 Hornet for instance but I don't really buy into the whole barrel burner theory.

Nope it's a brand new Winchester m70 super grade. It was too pretty to pass up and I've always wanted the caliber. When I noticed it on the gun rack it was more than I could resist. gun

I've always had good luck in .264 with H-1000 and IMR 7828. People have been saying Retumbo is good I haven't shot it.

Work up to 63.5gr of 7828, Fed 215m, 140 Sierra Gameking. I can't remember COL but I'm not that big on that because every gun's chamber is cut different. As long as it is above the minimum that's about all I care about. All my guns have their own ammo even same calibers.

I've tried retumbo, magnum, h4831, and imr 7977. These are what I have on hand and no luck. I have some H1000 also just haven't tried it yet. The throat on this gun appears to be short. Only have about .100" of bullet shank to work with before the ogive is into the neck. Using Nosler brass neck sized with Redding bushing dies. Competition seater. Bullet run out is .001.

Looking at the grooves at the end of the barrel reveals a lot of tool marks. I don't have a borescope and would probably not like what I see in this barrel. I used JB paste with Kroil last weekend but haven't shot it since then. I doubt it will make a difference but it's worth a try.
