I have a small plot that has just been enlarged to about 2 acres. Up until 3 weeks ago it was pine plantation. All stumps and debris will be removed by this weekend. I know the soil sucks right now. I will be liming and fertilizing, but it's going to take a while to affect the overall soil quality.

What are my planting options to get something up this season and help the overall soil quality?

I noticed WMS sells a "No-Till" blend that they claim is suited for "shady areas" and "logging roads". Anyone used this?

I’d think cereal rye plus crimson clover would be a good start. I’ve seen the WMS no till too, but haven’t pulled the trigger on getting any yet.

I planted 6 plots similar to what you are describing. Never been tilled, heavy pine debris etc.

Elbon rye and clover are coming up great in them.

Most commercial "no till" mixes contain a lot of Ryegrass. You could put out a fast acting lime, or better, put out Basic Slag. You'll get an almost immediate pH adjustment.

Cereal Rye is the best scavenger of nutrients of the cereal grains.

Glad to hear clover is doing good in a similar situation.

I figured rye would come up

What about BFO?

I agree, cereal rye, crimson clover and throw in some yucchi if you can find it.

I've never had a lot of luck with crimson clover and deer actually eating it. Just pretty stuff. I had rather have Yucci Arrowleaf any day.
