had to take some seed to my hunting camp yesterday and heard loggers on my lease, went in and they have ramped in 3 of my 5 chufa fields. I felt sick to my stomach when I saw it. RMS just hasn't treated us well since we had this lease and this just tops it all. we have less than 2% of our acreage in food plots and they cant seem to make a new ramp instead of ramping in my chufa fields. you can't have anything nice on timber land

Clear cutting or thinning? While it sucks to lose your food plots, the good news is they'll be gone by turkey season. It could be worse.

It could be worse. thinning for the second time in last two years for some unknown reason. they've cut on our lease 6 out of 8 years so far. just sucks that we've spent a couple thousand dollars getting these spots put in and worked and its pretty much flushed down the drain

That sucks. It's like they look for a food plot to destroy and will not clean up the mess they made when they leave

Here we go. Everybody understands that timber companies have to turn a profit and that doesn't include keeping lease holders happy. It doesn't make it right for them to come in and just wreck everything the man has poured money into. They could have at least called and let him now.

How did the openings get created to allow space for a plot? Did you or the club hire equipment and have it cleared for the sole purpose of a field?
Question about the 2% idea. Do you believe a timber company should designate 2% of there dirt to food plots?
No they shouldn't but shouldn't destroy his 2% either,I know it's there land but they still should respect the lease holders interest as well

They expect the lease holder to respect their interests. Calling the man in advance would have changed absolutely nothing. The only difference is you would have known they were about to destroy your plots.

Guys, I'm asking the questions to try and have a reasonable conversation.
95% of food plots on managed timberland was created out of opportunity, due to loading decks creating an opening. Those loading decks are located where they are for a reason - especially on land with some terrain. They will need to be used again and that needs to be known by anyone leasing the property.
I have denied requests for food plots to be created in certain places for the reasons stated above. But then encouraged other locations if a club wants to have permanent food plots that will be protected. Most all companies now will work with you in this way, if you are willing to pay for protected locations.
For the 2% issue. That is high percentage to expect, bottom line. That would be 20 acres of food plots on every 1000 acre lease. A strong number to shoot for would be 1%, or 10 acres of permanent plots per 1000 acre lease. That's reasonable. And remember, most folks have no idea what an acre looks like in a timber stand - it's a big food plot.
You guys have some valid points also.
I will also add that chufa looks a whole lot like a field that hasn't had any attention, or one waiting to be broken and planted. I may take a harder look and realize what it is, but most won't recognize it.

Well that does suck but the best weekend of turkey hunting in my life was in pines that had been thinned the year before. It rocked. Hope yours does to.

I may take a harder look and realize what it is, but most won't recognize it. the chufas were clean and planted in rows, weed free and beautiful. we actually have 1% of our land in food plots and the areas these were in, had not been used as ramps the last time they came in and cut. I have tried to get in touch with our land manager atleast 6 different times just to see if someone could give me a projected plan for our place and they won't even return my call. The club spent 1000$ getting these spots pushed out and atleast another 1000$ on chufas, fertilizer, all of my members driving 4 to 9 hours to help me plant them in the middle of july when it was 100 degrees. I understand that they must have needed to ramp there but it still stings to know how many chufas were wasted along side of money and effort. just the perks of leasing land. hopefully they will push them out before they leave property but I'm not expecting it

Good news is that those pines should be prime for turkey hunting this spring if they are getting thinned now. The benefit to the turkey from thinning a large stand of timber is probably a lot more beneficial than a few acres of chufas. I would not invest that kind of money into something that you don't have total control over.
