Word gets around. First - the billy bad asses show up to test you - then the rest decide they would rather not have to really fight for the stuff they are helping themselves to and find easier places to hit. The effect is the same as long as you can live through the initial onslaught of their bad boys.
Proper small unit tactics and cqc will not always guarantee you survive but it will swing the odds in your favor by a HUGE MARGIN.
In a more or less static situation, keep cover at all times. This is of paramount importance. A wood stud wall with drywall on one or both sides is actually just concealment - not cover. A brick wall with drywall on the inside is cover for pistols and shotguns with shot but not rifles and shotguns with slugs. The same wall filled with sand is almost cover for serious small arms. The same wall filled with flowable grout is cover until the grout starts to break up (probably twenty rounds of .308 or thirty/forty rounds of .223). Stack sand bags up to the ceiling inside that wall and it is cover.
When you engage the enemy, only poke out what is needed. That is almost always one eyeball and the weapon. The weapon can be replaced - you can't. When engaging on the off side from a barrier position (wall/doorway/etc.), put the leading toe against the barrier and then lean your body out to where you can get that one eyeball and weapon out. This is a very strange physical situation that takes practice to do right. The normal inclination is to stick half your body out there in the clean air - DON'T DO IT.
Always cut the pie when you have to move around - keep the weapon up and eyes on the sights - only look where the weapon is pointed. Always sweep the weapon right and then left. If up/down is needed, then sweep left, up, right, down, back left again. When traversing a doorway/gate in a solid wall/ portal etc. move out as far as you can away from the opening so you can expose what's behind it in small pieces as you move - sometimes what's behind it will be a hundred yards away - be aware of this - do not get tunnel vision a nd only focus on what's right in front of you. Move slowly when you can but don't sit still - a moving target is harder to hit. When in dynamic environments - move quickly.
BREATHE. I cannot stress this enough. Once engaged some people will stop breathing and literally cause themselves to black out. Breathe in - breathe out. Tell yourself out loud to do it if you have to.
When traversing a choke where you can't cut the pie, get down on the ground and peek around the corner quickly before you begin to move through it. Don't stick an eyeball out at head level where you think they are waiting for you.
Whoever is happy will make others happy too. Anne Frank

"I know a guy" lives down there told me there were a LOT of shots fired by armed groups of men who entered NO the day after Katrina hit. Said they came out and rearmed after three days and reentered. He didn't know any hit/wounded/fatality numbers because the men wern't talking.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
