Great movie! My wife gave me the book a few years ago for my birthday... written by an Alabamian. A timeless story that never gets old.

This and Jeremiah Johnson are the 2 best of all times. Never get tired of watching them over and over and over.

Loved that John Vernon went on to be Dean Wormer in Animal House.(The germans bombed pearl harbor)

John was also the Mayor in the first Dirty Harry.

Greatest movie of all time!!!!!

I had to get home from work to share one of the better parts of the book. It parallels the movie at the beginning when Captain Terrell and the other red legs burn his farm house. The last line in chapter one (see excerpt below) is especially chilling.

He had found them there in what had been the kitchen. They had fallen near the door, and the blackened skeleton arms of the baby boy were clinging to his mother's neck. Numbly, mechanically, Josey had gotten two sacks form the barn and rolled up the charred figures in them. He dug their single grave beneath the big water oak at the edge of the yard, and as darkness fell and moonlight slivered over the ruins, he tried to render the Christian burial.

But his Bible remembering would only come in snatches. "Ashes to ashes... dust to dust," he had mumbled through his blackened face. "The Lord gives and the Lord takes away." "Ye're fer me 'er agin' me, said Jesus." And finally, "An eye fer and eye... a tooth fer a tooth."

Great tears rolled down the smoked face of Josey Wales there in the moonlight. A tremble shook his body with uncontrollable fierceness that chattered his teeth and jerked his head. It was the last time Josey Wales would cry.

Love the movie, but never could stand his little slut Sandra though
