I have several that I think are old military issue machetes I use on a regular basis.
They are easy to sharpen with a file, hold a good SHARP edge and are fairly stiff.
I've had a gerber machete and it was junk. May of just been a bad one by Gerber, but I won't buy another one from them.

I use a combination of machete, loppers and Husqvarna hedge trimmers when trimming trails and lanes.

I use one of these: Keep it sharp and it will work great. Especially on the honey locust trees and all the other thorny trees that are prevalent in Sumter... However they will just bounce off a osage orange. Only way to work on them is Tordon.

A Gerber brush hook This is what I been using for about 10 years. Best machete I ever had. I sharpen it to almost a razor edge and it'll cut small trees.

I picked a cheap one up at Harbor Freight last year. It is 18" long and has a serrated blade. The handle is solid and made of a hard rubber compound and the blade does not flex that much at all. For light to medium use for $5-6 you cannot beat it. I strap it to my climber or day pack and it has come in very handy. My hunting buddies laughed at me when I showed it to them, but they all ended up liking it. Machete

keep a machete on the 4 wheeler and a bush axe in the tool box of the truck.
When I go with the intention of cutting roads & lanes I use a gas hedge trimmer.

I've got an old orange handle Ontario knife that I use some time. I've found a good set of loppers is better

It's been two decades but I used one for work for a long time doing survey crew stuff. It doesn't really matter which one, find one you can swing all day without getting too bad of a sore hand and then keep it sharp.

Black handle Ontario Knife. We've got several. Work well, along with loppers and a pole saw for brush clearing. If our pole saw breaks, we just return it to Lowe's and say it was defective Im pretty thats the brand i have now with the finger guard. Its been a good one.

I have had a pair of "Big Brother " by Ez-Cut they are ratcheting and extendable had them for 10 or 12 years and still have a brand new blade that came with them i haven't put on yet.

I'm a surveyor, I commented earlier on my favorite brand to use but we wrap our handles In tennis racquet wrap.
