Gun shops and pawn shops are not going to give you a number you would be happy accepting in a settlement, at least not in my opinion. Then you're using the wrong gun shop. Working in that store doesn't necessarily qualify them to be experts. The gun store I trust the most is about 1.5 hours from my house.

Most businesses I come across are out to make a profit, and that means offering prices lower than what they think they can resell it for. Now I realize you can have a great relationship with one and they would give you a number closer to retail. But if I did that and put it on a piece of paper for an insurance company I'd want to be compensated for my time.

If you want an idea of what your firearms are worth look at the Blue Book of Gun Values. If anyone comes after this post and says it isn't accurate I'll go ahead now and say I completely disagree. I'm at a lot of gun shows before they open to the public. I see guys at the gun shows looking in the blue book going across the room and buying something off another dealer then bringing it to their table and putting a different price on it and selling the item every single show. There was a guy that sat behind me in B'ham about a year ago that showed up with Zero guns and before 10:00 Saturday had accumulated a decent table and by end of show Sunday only had 1-2 left. He was using a Blue Book to reference values.
You're average "Gun Store" or Pawn shop doesn't have a frickin clue what your guns are worth if you have anything of real value.
They can accurately quote a Mossberg 835 that is about it.
It isn't the actual firearm itself that is the problem... it is the fact that they can't grade it correctly. And that is where you can get into serious trouble on Gunboker too.
Drug down a gravel road behind a 4-wheeler isn't 90%+.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.
