Sunday at lunch I bit down on a tiny piece of bone in a bite of pork chop. I didn't feel anything out of the normal at the time. Sunday night I grabbed a handful of peanuts and when I bit down on one of them I had a sharp shooting pain in one of my lower molars. Pain kept getting worse so Monday morning I called my dentist and got worked in around lunch. I thought I had a filling coming out, but ends up that I broke the cusp off that molar. Doc said I'd need a crown. A little grinding later, he fits me with a temp crown and I'll go back in 3 weeks to get the permanent one. I asked if I would be getting a root canal prior to getting the permanent crown and he said he saw no reason to think I'd need one. So I sort of expected my toof to still hurt yesterday, but even today I can't chew anything on that side without a shooting pain in that tooth. Not even soft food like bread. This is my first crown and I don't know what to expect. I'm gonna call the dentist in the morning but I thought I'd see what the aldeer expert crew thought. I consider myself part of the aldeer expert crew so I'm gonna throw out that the pain isn't normal and I'm gonna need a root canal, but I hate to answer my own questions.

I was hoping you'd chime in. The upper tooth isn't hitting it when I simply close my mouth. Only if I have food on that side when chewing.
Thanks!

I have three on the same side, two bottom and one on top.
Last one I got, when he removed the temp crown and was getting ready to drill-smooth everything for the real crown, he asked if I wanted any novocaine. I said no because I didn't want my jaw from the joint to my front teeth to be numb, and the last time he literally hit the nerve twice.
"You sure? I can give you a little."
Nope, clean it.
I didn't get any, but I don't recommend that. I felt sorta like Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man waiting on, "Is it safe yet?"
My teeth didn't hurt after I got my temps or crowns other than normal soreness.

The last crown that I got I didn't get/need a root canal. The tooth was very hot/cold sensitive the entire time I had the temp but didn't ache or anything like that. For a little while after I got the permanent crown it was temp sensitive but it's been a year or longer and no issues at all now.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I've got one of each. A crown on a tooth with a root canal and a crown on one without. My dentist has the machine in his office that makes the crown on site, so there is no waiting. I actually had better luck with the tooth that did not have the root canal.

When I was 5, German measles had me running a 105° fever for 4 days. I recovered, but the illness caused damage that wasn't apparent until several years later, when my permanent teeth came in. All had a deep groove across the face of the tooth and none of them had any enamel. By the time the condition was discovered and corrected, they were permanently discolored, and much weaker than normal, healthy teeth. As a result, I now have 32 crowns...every tooth. Over the years, I've occasionally chipped or broken one, or just worn them out (I sometimes grind my teeth in my sleep), and have had to have some of them replaced, but other than that, I've never had any problem with them, and I've never had a root canal. I have, now and then, had an ill-fitting temp that needed some minor adjustment, and on 2 occasions, I've had the crown to come off...both times while I was in Brazil, and both times I superglued it back on and it was fine until I could get back and have them recemented.

Thanks for the replies. Toothdoc, my wife says I act like a 12 year old, so you're good. The tooth, or what's left of it under the temp crown doesn't hurt as long as I'm not chewing anything. I just ate some watermelon and I chewed it on that tooth without any pain but a couple of times did feel a little for a split second or two. Clem I came pretty close to going with no shot yesterday, but didn't pull the trigger. I don't mind getting shots at all. I get 2 a month with a 20 gauge 1 1/2" long needle in the buttocks and they don't bother me a bit but that little bitty needle in my mouth is about more than I can stand. Freaks me out.

About 6 months ago I had to get one. About 2 am I woke up and the temp had come off and was in my mouth. Scared the heck out of me

"Expect" to be shocked when they give you the bill and you find out how much of the total your insurance won't be paying for Truth. Not counting the replacements, I'm in for something over $15000.

3 crowns and no root canals and no problems. I will however have nightmares from Clem's account though. I had a dentist hit a nerve on a tooth that wasn't deadened enough yet and to this day that is my biggest phobia. Every time they need to drill on my teeth I seriously consider just having it pulled instead. I hate the drill with all the passion I can muster.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
