How many of you guys use a machete for woods work - hacking vines, trails, killing venomous flying rattleheadedcoppermoccasins, slicing apples for your grandchild?

If so, which do you like and use/

Black handle Ontario Knife. We've got several. Work well, along with loppers and a pole saw for brush clearing. If our pole saw breaks, we just return it to Lowe's and say it was defective whistle

I've heard this was possible.

I have an old one my grandfather had made from a leaf spring of an old farm truck. Needs a new handle now so it is not in use. Had a little billhook built into it that was sharpened also, great for grabbing vines and cutting by pulling when you couldn't slash.

I keep a basic cheap Gerber machete in the truck.

I really want a Kukuri or Barong style in a really good steel. Think they are cool.

I do. guys at the hunting club love using loppers for trail trimming. ill never understand that. I can work circles around a pair of loppers with a lot less effort. my machetes are 29" and if you know how to sharpen them, you can make quick work out of limbing roads.

IMACASA 15 INCH HOOKED CANE KNIFE/MACHETE. Use one and you'll never go back to a regular machete.

I've got a Gerber gator and i hate it i bought it when they first came out and it's the biggest pile of junk. I've seen angry beavers chew trees faster then this thing can club a small limb off. Every time I give it so someone to use and intentionally leave it in their truck it gets returned usually following the words "hey you left your snazzy butter knife in my truck the other day"

The ultimate "machete" for trimbing limbs and brush is a cane knife. More weight forward in the blade than a traditional machete

I've got one that has a hook on the end, and tapers our to a very wide blade the closer to the end it gets. Don't know who made it, it's old. When it's sharp, I can clear out lanes in a hurry.

A Gerber brush hook is wicked in the woods. I recommend wrapping tennis racket grip tape on the handle.

Martindale 18in bush/Latin machete. They are made in England and we use them everyday surveying. Once you start filling down to a good edge, they are awesome. Only $30 too.

I used a machete for years, but use a council tool ditch bank blade now. It has a longer reach and I don't get whipped by bushes using it.

I got a Gerber with the saw on the back. Works great. I leave it in the truck, I'll limb a road up quick, I keep it sharp. I think it would take a head clean off.

As bad of shape that they're in, they haven't stopped me from anything short of an intentionally felled tree on the river. They stay in the boat.

I have a couple of these, and they are working pieces of plunder. The only problem with them is that people want to keep them after they use one.

Have one but use it rarely. If cutting a trail or limbing roads my tool of choice is a husky trimmer with a blade on it. Much faster and less strenuous than a machete.

I have several that I think are old military issue machetes I use on a regular basis.

They are easy to sharpen with a file, hold a good SHARP edge and are fairly stiff.

I've had a gerber machete and it was junk. May of just been a bad one by Gerber, but I won't buy another one from them.

I use a combination of machete, loppers and Husqvarna hedge trimmers when trimming trails and lanes.

I'm 54 and have probably chopped down 40 acres in my lifetime using nothing but a Gerber machete. I do occasionally use a manual pole saw.

I use one of these:

Keep it sharp and it will work great. Especially on the honey locust trees and all the other thorny trees that are prevalent in Sumter...

However they will just bounce off a osage orange. Only way to work on them is Tordon.

I picked a cheap one up at Harbor Freight last year. It is 18" long and has a serrated blade. The handle is solid and made of a hard rubber compound and the blade does not flex that much at all. For light to medium use for $5-6 you cannot beat it. I strap it to my climber or day pack and it has come in very handy. My hunting buddies laughed at me when I showed it to them, but they all ended up liking it.

keep a machete on the 4 wheeler and a bush axe in the tool box of the truck.

When I go with the intention of cutting roads & lanes I use a gas hedge trimmer.

I've got an old orange handle Ontario knife that I use some time. I've found a good set of loppers is better

It's been two decades but I used one for work for a long time doing survey crew stuff. It doesn't really matter which one, find one you can swing all day without getting too bad of a sore hand and then keep it sharp.

You can do better with loppers at times. I have had a pair of "Big Brother " by Ez-Cut they are ratcheting and extendable had them for 10 or 12 years and still have a brand new blade that came with them i haven't put on yet.

Most mentioned are junk compared to an Imacassa. I only know because I've bought that junk sometime in the past.

I forgot about my Imacasa. I had a scabbard I made for it so it could ride on the saddle when I was riding horses. Might have saved me getting hurt more than once. I need to find that thing. your right it was a good one!
