I know it's probably been beat to death, but I'm going down to OB in early Oct and will be doing some casting from shorelines. Where do I need to go? No species in particular, I'm just wanting to catch something edible.

You need at least a 16' titanium rod with no less than 400lb test line and a live pig (full grown, not no little sissy piglet) for bait.
But seriously live shrimp will catch just about anything from the shore. I've had good success with that and various cut baits. There are others who can articulate better guidance but you can't go wrong with live scrimps off or near the bottom on light-ish line - like 12 or 14 lb test.

Fish Bites. They stay on your hook way longer than a shrimp. Might catch a Pompano, whiting or small shark. If you are wading out far enough to cast into some deeper water try casting a Gotcha lure. I've caught plenty of fish on them including Spanish mackeral.

Go to Gulf State Park pier. It's a great place to fish and there's a Gulf Shores Pier Fishing Forum on the web.

You can fish them on the bottom or off. The Gotcha lure is cast and retrieve that you are supposed to twitch on the retrieve. Yes, tie a Flouro leader on the Gotcha.
