At first light this morning I let out 3 soft cow calls and instantly heard a calf chirp. Then I heard a limb break to my left. I dropped my pack and started slipping closer and glassed a cow about 100 yds away. With the wind direction I decided to circle below.
As I slipped down the cut, it sounded like they were going parallel to me. I hit a wall of alders and had to go farther down to cut across them. After getting through, I belined straight for the sound of sticks breaking and what sounded like antlers bumping limbs. Sure enough, he started ripping into some alders and I picked up the pace.
After that, the dang elk cut through the wall of alders to the side I started out On. I hauled butt back down to cross over and headed their way again.
After hearing them moving, I headed in for another try. I ended up spotting the bull and a cow about 60yds away. I moved up about 5 yds and noticed a cow starring at me. Jig was up and they went right. I broke right as well but, couldn't close the gap before they jumped into the reprod. The bull was a descent 5x5

Yea man... I'm not too worried about killing one, I just like chasing and stalking them. I could have shot a descent 5x5 a couple weeks ago but, was trying to push them to my son.

To top it off my bino harness was wet so, my swarovskis are sitting at home cause I forgot them. I'm using a pair of nikons I happened to leave in the truck when I took the kid hunting. Not even close to the same binos

Only saw 2 elk in thick reprod yesterday and this morning. Too windy, thunderstorms, and heavy rains. Sux and not typical for elk season here. They holding tight and not talking.

Finally got on a hot bull last nite. I did a few cow calls and light bugle and got a chuckle in the bottom of some reprod. After we spotted the bull, my son and I beat feet down a little grassy road and found him a spot to shoot.
I would chuckle and the bull would trash a tree and start to chuckle. As soon as he started his chuckle, I'd cut him off with a bugle and trash the alders.
We pulled the bull 300+ yards and ran out of light. Hunter had to range bull and point range finder to the sky to read the yardage. He was right at 50yds when we bailed.
On the way to the bikes I mentioned that I hope the bull didn't come on the landing and catch my scent. Didn't matter, the bottom dropped out and it rained heavily pretty much soon as I mentioned scent.

Went after same bull this morning. Needless to say it was raining. Long story short, the bull responded the same as last night. We had worked our way through a pretty open clear cut, crossed a huge ravine, and set up on an old skid row. I chuckled, bull chuckled, tore up trees. I did the same. I worked him from 200+ yards while hiding at the edge of the ravine, behind a big bush. I couldn't see anything but Hunter. I knew the bull was close.
I heard the bull break and run, saw hunter trying to make a play with no joy.
The bull only had to pass 1 bushy spruce for Hunter to get a shot. Instead, the bull stopped between the 2 closely spaced bushy trees and looked right at Hunter. 12yards, smh. It was cool working the bull for him, just wish the bull had taken 3 or 4 more steps toward me.

Hunters got tonight to hunt and then back to work at 0600 tomorrow. Gonna let him sit chicory field so he gets home early. Gives my legs a break. I could probably tag that bull from this morning but, ill prolly go look for a bigger bull.

I should bow fish... 27 salmon so far. Hunters 60 yds from primary trail with good wind. I'm bored and 198 yds from same trail in case one comes in and I need to try to coax him closer. 3 rigs at timber gate, hopefully they not trespassing in the timber. 50/50 on that if they locals.

Are you getting any of that snow?
I saw that Oregon was getting a ton of it on the news last night

Several cows early last nite. Bulls at dark. Prolly bugles 30+ times pushing cows. I know what took so long for them to come, he had like 40 cows.
