So a friend of mine busted his ground the week before season and top sowed wheat. I thought he waited way too late. He ended up having a great hunt. Now I know not all fields are created equal but does anybody think that it's best to not start too early? Kinda like the way a new restaurant is popular when it first opens?

I started August 1st and top sewed different spots all the way up to the weekend before the season to try to hold the birds. What odd is there is one section of the wheat it doesn't look like they have touched. Now the stuff I put out in early August is 6 inches tall

We will burn that bridge when we get there

I think he got pretty lucky or was already in a great location. I see you're in Bibb county, and I think we had more doves in general this year than most years all around.

Most of the better dove hunts I've ever been on began with prep work in May, June and July.

The millet that we had turned around 8/1 which was about 2-3 weeks early. We had birds then. I did all I could to hold what we had and increase numbers, but I honestly think we had just as many then as we had this past weekend.

I'm not a fan of top sewn wheat (other than for holding birds) for the reason Beadle mentioned above. Too much work and then on the first rain your dove field becomes a food plot. If that's all you do for a dove field, it's really just a flash in the pan method...which is great if you only want to make a hunt the first weekend, but I'm addicted to shooting (at) those suckers.
