I have a group of fellas looking to hunt Prairie Dogs out west next year. Looking to do an unguided hunt on public and private land (if we can get permission).

Anyone have any tips, tricks, maps, etc?

Never tried it on public or by knocking on doors, but I doubt it would be too hard to get permission. If you've got time to search google maps, you can see them on the maps. Here's one I've shot before in Nebraska while on a turkey hunt.

Might want to check flying into Laramie and the public land around there for prairie dogs. Also could look into over-the-counter tags for pronghorn (does, maybe) and do a combo hunt. A .223 would let the air out of a speedgoat.

A friend of mine went the week before last to Rhame, North Dakota and hunted on a family's farm there. He and another guy shot a bunch of them. Send me a PM if you want his name and number and he can fill you in on the details.

Real easy i've shot a bunch from the Dakotas all the way to Texas.

I've never hunted public land, always private.

Here is the key to get access anywhere - Show respect. Be polite, Professional and be upfront with the landowner on what you want to do. Offer to help out on the ranch before you go shooting. Never pay to do this, out of 5 ranches one will want some cash, don't pay go somewhere else.

Another strategy is go to a small town bar and start buying drinks, you will have places to hunt in a couple of beers.

It only takes one group of guys shooting up the place and leaving crap everywhere to get a rancher to never let anyone on his property ever again...

What skipjack said. I travel to New Mexico every year and about ten years ago I just went and knocked on a couple doors and got lucky and got thousands of acres to hunt every time I go out. Help out a little in the ranch and most the time they say you don't even have to do that but I feel it's the right thing to do. Most the ranchers just want the dogs gone. Good luck, you should be able to find plenty of land to shoot dogs on.
