Just found out that bang sticks are illegal for the harvest of fish in FL. They are legal for self protection but I doubt I could convince a GW that I chummed up, fished for, hooked and landed a shark and it was suddenly a threat.
Ho w do you guys that kayak fish subdue a really big one or a really toothy one?

Knife to the brain/spinal cord? If it's small a tail rope? Harpoon?

I think that the state of FL also requires that you video such an encounter and post it on ALDeer.com.

Yeah - wanting to keep it. Tuna bat and beat like hell. Once again, the ol' "Hit it with a hammer" solution continues to be the best option.

Ya'll need to take up a collection for a gopro or similar then. Yeah - wanting to keep it. Tuna bat and beat like hell. Once again, the ol' "Hit it with a hammer" solution continues to be the best option. Amazing how many things that will resolve when properly applied.

You will not need a special plastic welder to fill the holes. A soldering iron and filler rod works fine. Although Harbor Freight has a pretty cheap plastic welder that will work.
Hopefully the bite marks are above the waterline.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...

Hopefully the bite marks are above the waterline. I'll be in Ochlockonee Bay so should just be able to walk back to shore most of the time if needed. Dragging a bloody grey suit may be a challenge with all the others around.

I'll be calling LE at FWC to see if that's legal. I hate to carry any of my weapons on the yak though, I'll have to buy some piece of crap just for that. Even in a dry bag it'll get spray and scales and brains and blood and crap on it.

catching sharks in a kayak is about like having the screen door chits when you're 30 ft up in a climber. 2 situations I don't want to be in.

Just remember a 3 foot shark can tear your ass up when it starts chomping.

From FWC this morning:
"Good day Eugene,
You cannot use a bang stick or a pistol to harvest sharks in Florida state waters. They can be harvested by hook and line only.
Thanks,

I asked him if he had any suggestions for making toothy and energetic creatures into something I could tie to the side of the boat or throw in the cooler/fish bag. The FWC officer then asked me to call him to discuss. I called, left a message and have gotten no call back.

And the plot thickens. The guys on one of the local fishing forums want to film the landing and subduing of a sizeable legal shark using the blunt force technique.
Then send it to media outlets and explain exactly why you have to do that. They're hoping public opinion will get a policy change enacted.
I say be careful what you ask for, they may outlaw it all together.

If you tickle its belly, it will only bite you once! Of course once may take off a leg, depending on it's size. They are looking for keepers too. THE FWC officer is probably going to suggest you write your name and SSAN on your extremities to make it easier for the coroner too.

Got checked by federal Wildlife officer today. Talk to him about it for a while. He said use a knife duct taped to a stick. We wore the blue crabs out. Hooked up with three sharks and landed none. One of them was 4 and 1/2 ft long and had a white Remora on it. Saw that one coming from 150 yards away. We were in a canal next to St Marks lighthouse
