Deer were eating neighbor's roses down to the nub. She gave me permission to hunt. There was an oak flat surrounded by cutover pines. I noticed squirrels shaking acorns out of the trees. Snuck in there one morning carrying my Grizzly ladder. Set up, settled in and saw a doe. Shot, stuck her far back but she didn't go far. M

Was my first year of bowhunting and I had made enough errors for a lifetime of hunting. I was walking back to my truck through a grownup cow pasture and walked up on a big 7 pointer eating acorns along the fence row. I only had one arrow left and hit it high in the chest above the heart but actually hit an artery. There was blood everywhere. I tracked the deer about 50 yards in to the woods. Been hooked on bowhunting since.
I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern

First morning I ever bowhunted I was hunting at the bottom of the mountain next to the creek in an old lock-on. Bout 20 min after light, I saw a deer coming down the other side of the creek, but couldn't tell what it was. It was cold enough that morning that you could see its breath. Anyways, as it crossed the creek about 15 yards, I could tell it was a buck and slung an arrow. I knew the shot hit high and I only got about 3 inches of penetration. Watched him run up the mountain wide open. Trailed very little blood and wound up jumping him two different times. A year later, a buddy of mine finds a dead buck within 40 yards of where I shot the one opening morning. All he took was the head. Went back and found my broad head. Missed the spinal cord by about two paper widths. The deer lived at least long enough for the vertebrae to grow back around the broad head. I guess he eventually died of infection. Wish I would've found him sooner cause I would have had him mounted. Got a free euro mount though. Still my largest bow kill.
Yeah, well, I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas: sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches.

Hunting with 2 customers in Starkville, Ms mid November 2006. We had steaks the night before and they drank way too much beer and whiskey and decided to sleep in the next morning. Weather was very nasty and wind blowing like crazy. I drove 370 miles to hunt so I decided to go anyway. Got in the middle of a ton of acorn trees hoping the deer would feed here before the storm since the wind was blowing down acorns like crazy. About an hour after sunrise, I saw a small buck cross the road where the acorn trees first started. I kept looking and counted 8 more bucks after him. And the last one was a nice 10 point still in partial velvet. They all fed towards me. The big 10 was walking straight towards me with a huge oak directly in front of us. He stopped behind the tree and had to turn left or right. He turned left and gave me a 25 yard broadside shot. I shot and it hit him and sounded like a paper bag had burst. He looked left and right and fell over dead. I took my bloody arrow and walked back to the camp where the guys were fixing breakfast. Boy were they surprised. About 3 hours later, a F2 tornado hit Starkville, MS first then went on to hit Tuscaloosa. In total, killing 11 people.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Don't remember the exact year, but I'm guessing mid-90's. One season I joined a club across the highway from Maplesville high school. There was a nice house at the entrance of our club (dirt road to our club turned just beside this house), and just behind that house was a SMZ with white oaks. This was just a tiny little triangle of our land right on the boundary line, literally might have been 2 or 3 acres right there. From the tree you could see that house. I had scouted in there the week before season opened and there were already some acorns dropping and a few piles of poop. Opening morning of bow season I climbed in there before daylight and had deer come in before I could see. One of them stayed just a little too long, and I smoked a big ol doe! She ran about 75 yards and it crashed!! #hookedforlife

Killed my first deer with a bow last season amongst the palmettos in a swamp on our lease in Dallas county. It was a good sized doe, she came in with 6 other does and I shot her at 15 yards.
The adrenaline was unreal. I have no idea why anyone would wanna do drugs when they could just take up bow hunting. You should try bow hunting while on crystal meth

1981. Browning bow, no sights. XX 78 arrows. Wasp broadheads. Killingsworth Cove. Had two stands build in a big chestnut oak. I was I the highest one looking one way, cousin was in the lower one looking the other way. Big ol doe came in and turned broad side. Just as I was about to release she turned he rearend to me but I let it fly. Hit her almost the female place. She ran off and under yet another buddy in a tree 50 yards from us. He started yelling I got her. Hit the femoral artery. As good a blood trail as I've ever had. I think we were all at full draw on her waiting for the first offered shot. LOL

First one i shot was a 3 point i was 13 i think shot my first 2 arrows at does an missedem baaad..like 6ft high bad. I was shakin so bad i couldnt hold my 45lb sissy jennings back, dropped one arrow out the stand an for some reasonthat 3 point hung around. He was facin me so i set tha pin right in the center of his chest..found him bout 2 years later lookin for another deer. First one i actually kilt when i shot him was bout my best alabama deer yet. I was 15 and huntin in greene co on some corps land with my brother an he told me where to go climb a tree so went, i didnt see nothin til dark an it was bout so dark i couldnt see my pins an i heard somethin an looked up an all i could see was the shape of the deer, i knew it had a big body but i just assumed it was a big doe. So i drew back an i couldnt see zip through my peep but id hung around old bowhunters long enough to know you can aim outside the peep if its to dark to see through it and it just so happened id practiced for this scenario quiet a bit so i aimed and allowed for the shot an i knew i hit the deer but that was about it. I waited bout 30 min an along came my brother an he was hunting exactly where the deer ran. He said he heard somethin come runnin by him but dcouldnt see it..he said it sounded funny like it was snortn so he thought it was a hog. I proceeded to tell him i shot a doe and it ran his way. So we walked across a slough an found a spec of blood or 2 and. I was feelin sick on account of the blood trail. But he saif what ever came by him was slowin down bad an it was hurt, so we walked up the other side an there layed my arrow an a puddle of blood bout big as ur fist an he said well it aint lookin good so we started loopin an wudnt long he hollered "got blood" so i went to him for i could get there he hollered "where ever its at its dead" an i got there an they was blood everywhere. We knew she couldnt be much farther an we wer gettin close to the highway an if she went across she was gone on private land. All at once we come out in the open and my worst fear it was the bank leadin up to the highway which was a little causeway that crossed the slough. For some reason tho my brother picked his light up an 20 yards aheads of us was an antler stickin up..dead under the bridge. He looked at me an he said that aint no doe an he tore out runnin an when he got there he just hit his knees an looked at me an said "well..you got us all beat now" an i run up there an low in behold.. My doe turned into a 125 5/8 in 10 point. I just didnt know what to say i bout broke down an cried right there i was so tickled. I had missed quiet a few deer and lost that 3 point, but this made up for it. By far the most memorable hunt ive ever had..ill never forget it

It was October 1998 at the age of 14. It was my first year bowhunting and I had a Jennings Barracuda shooting about 196 Fps. I had hung a stand on the edge of a pasture in amongst 5-6 big white oaks. They were all raining acorns. About 8:00 that morning a couple does and a fawn showed up. I was very eager to make my first archery kill so I didn't watch them long. I drew back on the smallest doe, which I assumed was not the mother of the fawn. I settled in and released. Clean miss. They all took off and stopped about 75 yards out. They slowly made their way back and I was a nervous wreck. I let them all get close again, and settled in on the same doe at 12 yards broadside. Sunk it right in there right to her front leg and she ran about 35 yards before piling up. It was one of the most exciting things I've ever done. I still get excited over every bow kill to this day.

An old doe quartering away from me shooting an old Bear Compound, and I mean old on both accounts. My accuracy was lacking an I hit her dead center in her ham. She bled good and I didn't even hit the artery. She ran into some yellow sage so that made it easy. Found her about a hundred yards away. That fueled three things. My desire to go, my desire for better equipment and finally, my understanding of the need for accuracy through practice. Chuck Adams in his book on bowhunting says not to discount a ham shot. He claims it is one of the deadlier shots out there and will always lead to bleeding to death. It was true in my case but I still wouldn't recommend doing it intentionally.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

My 2nd biggest buck I shot in the ham on purpose. It was about to crest a hill but stoped behind a tree. I shot in the lower ham broad side. That was the bloodiest blood trail I've ever seen. 130" 8 point chocolate antlers. Shot it with a rifle not a bow.

Doe - 25-yards - pass-through - she ran about 30-yards. Took three of us to drag her up the hill, not that she was that big - just the hill was steep and a very long drag.

2 seasons ago at my grandmas place. About 10 yards from the tree. She was quartered away hard and I got one lung. She might have ran 250 yards... Shot her up on the ridge and she crashed in the very bottom

Got my first deer with a bow 50 years ago when I was 20. I killed it with a Bear recurve at 20 yards in Sharon, VT. I hit it well and tracked it about 400 yards and lost the blood trail. I was camping out in the woods, so I walked back to my campsite to rest and drink a Coke. While sitting on the ground sipping on my Coke, she stumbled right in front of me, and I finished her off with a second arrow. Both of my largest whitetails have been with a bow- a 167 3/8 P&Y and a 160 P&Y.

Got my first one on Nov. 6, 1994 in Fosters. It was a 70# doe. Shot her at 33 yards with a Browning Mag Compact and an Easton 2213 tipped with a 4 blade 125gr. Muzzy. Wound up hitting her through the neck and dropped her where she stood. I was in a strip of hardwoods about 80 yards from my front door in a ladder stand about 20 yards form a white oak. I shot a cow horn spike the morning before but hit him too far back.

Back in the early 80's, I killed my first deer, a doe, with a Brown Bear 65# draw compound bow. It had a flipper rest. I would practice and practice with field points, then the night before the season opened, I would screw on my bear razorheads with the bleeder blades and expect them to hit where my field points did. I was still hunting on the ground and she came right in to me. I spined her at 20 yards, hitting about a foot from where I was aiming. I was so happy. She was a very old doe and probably the toughest deer I have ever eaten. Equipment and knowledge sure has come a long way since then. I've killed 3 elk, (6x5 bull, 5x5 bull, and a cow) with my bow and numerous deer since that time. I used to bowhunt through gun season. Bowhunting taught me a lot about deer and deer behavior.

I know some of you youngsters don't know what a long bow is but it was before the compound bow without all the contractions we put on the bows today (me also). That was my first kill 50 years ago and It was a 8 point and I had it mounted. It cost me a whooping $45.00 for that. I've killed many and bigger since that but that deer takes first place for me.

First was a buck with a tall spike horn on the right side and just a fugly looking knarled stub of a horn on the left side. I was up a tree on the edge of a green patch and he came out and started eating about 28 yards in front of me. He was quartering hard away from me. I shot him between the last two ribs on his right side and it lodged in the shoulder joint of his left side. I was using a Steelforce broadhead and a Mathews Q2 bow. He tore out of the patch and ran into the woods on a side where there was a deep ditch. I heard a real loud "WHOP" not long after he entered the woods. When I got to him he was lying in the ditch. Looked like he had tried to jump it but didn't have the legs left by then to make it across. Needless to say I was tickled. Nothing like killing one with a bow.

Sept 17 1992 at Ft Bragg, NC. Decided to go with a bow and shot 3D's all that spring/summer. 10 days into the season, a spike in velvet browsed his way within range at 30 yards. I drew back once when he was behind a tree and he stayed there too long. I let down and my arrow came off the string and fell to the ground. He alerted for a bit and then went back to browsing. I nocked another arrow and he was at 28 slightly quartering away. Without thought, the arrow was on it's way and it seemed it took forever to get there. It hit right behind the shoulder and he ran about 40 yards and plowed nose first into the ground DRT. When dressing it out, the heart had a perfect 3-blade muzzy hole right through it. Killed 2 more that year and never picked up a gun (ML) again for over 20 years.

Fall of '88 Ben Pearson Mach 1 with metal sight pins and full length aluminum arras with original Wasp 4-blades...shooting fingers, no release no tab. Rambo didn't have chit on me .... spined a basket rack 6 @ 15-20yds. I remember thinking dang this bowhunting thing is wayyy too easy. Mmmm hmmm, only took me another 18yrs before I killed another buck with a bow. Very humbling.

Old doe on a Laurel oak flat. Right at dark, could see her body through the sights, as I drew back, she caught me. She started bobbing her head trying to figure what I was. I put the cross hairs on her shoulder and let the muzzy fly. Centered her forehead and she dropped like a ton of bricks. Only thing I can think of is she had her head in front of her shoulder when I hit the trigger on my release.

I didn`t start bow hunting until well after I began hunting. I don`t remember the year but it was my 1st time ever in the woods with a bow. Had 3 spikes come out right under me. Shaking so damn bad I could hardly aim but I managed to kill one of them.

Shot a doe when I was about 15, hit her a tad low and in the liver and she proceeded to run from the top of the mountain to the bottom, one of the worst drags of my life. Missed a ton before her and have successfully missed a bunch more since!

Only killed 4 deer with a bow. 1st one was a doe I shot on a food plot in Elmore county probably 25 years ago. Spine shot her at 25 yards and she dropped in her tracks. Had to do a follow up arrow to kill her.

It was a cool, crisp morning, the dew was shimmering like a waterfall on the corn pile .... In all seriousness, it was exhilarating to stick a doe that came thru the head of woods that morning; I'd done the typical trail cam stuff & had a pretty good idea of what time they'd be passing thru... The Bear Truth II didn't fail me...

It was my first season really hunting. I'd been taken by a friend before, but all this was on me.
First (thus far only) bow kill
My dad had allowed me to build a platform off the back of his barn in Madison county. I had worked really hard to put a food plot next to it, and it was growing well. Trail camera had picked up deer in the plot. I'd been busted drawing by a doe on opening day in Jackson county and I hadn't seen anything within range since. It was Sunday, November 9 2014, the first cold day of the season. I'm pretty bummed as I hadn't seen anything, or heard anything by 0800. The dogs up at the house start losing their collective minds barking. The barn is between myself and the house which is about 150 yards away, so I can't see what they're barking at. A small deer comes bouncing through from the West. It stopped long enough for me to say "that's a little guy", then it looked behind and then took off again. Mama comes walking through in no hurry about 15 seconds later. She stops broadside of me about 25 yards away. I had been able draw when she walked behind a big poplar tree. I let it fly. She tore out of there like she was on fire. I could see my lighted nock stuck in the ground. My first thought was, damn you practiced for 9 months and you missed. (Got the bow in January. I started keeping track of the arrows fired in April, more than 3,000 shots total that year for practice) I Then noticed the bright red swath of blood dripping off the brush she had blown through to get out of there. I nearly fell off the platform. I got down still shaking, checked my watch and said I'll give it 20 minutes. I went and got my arrow, and it was covered in blood. Fixed broad head was covered in tissue, blood, and bone fragments. I made myself walk up to the house, get a glass of water and anything else I could think of to make myself wait on tracking the doe. The last thing I wanted was to bump her. That 20 minutes seemed like 4 hours. I finally went to look and found her 40 yards away with a blood trail Stevie wonder could have followed. I cut her open and examined my hit. I nicked the Aorta and cleanly through both lungs. The processor said he was quite sure that the doe was 4 or 5 year old and that was a hell of a deer to be your first.
I regret not taking more pictures.
I never could figure out where they came from as the west is nothing but houses. It's possible they came from the North, jumped the fence and then came through my food plot, but I doubt the little guy could have jumped the fence.

late afternoon, opening day of rifle season. other guys in the club thought I was crazy for bowhunting on the opening day of gun season.
ladder stand in an oak flat overlooking intersection of 2 trails. about 45 min before dark, 2 "does" came in crossing behind me from right to left, NOT where they were "supposed" to come from. As soon as they were directly behind me, with the tree hiding me from their view, I got up and turned around and grabbed my bow. Couldn't draw on them because the strap from my harness (before I changed to a Rock Climbing harness) was over my shoulder and preventing me from drawing. Slowly spun around so the strap was over my other shoulder and had to squat about halfway in order to draw. at this point they were about 25 yards, quartering away. I drew on the bigger doe, only to realize it was actually a 1-horn spike. Unfortunately for him I was already drawn and there was no going back. arrow entered right behind his last rib and exited around the far side front shoulder. ran about 50yds and piled up.
none of the other guys in the club even saw a deer that day, much less killed one.

I am old and can't remember my first, but my most memorable was this one. It was my first year using a release, and my first hunt with a release. I go to get out of the truck, and I have no release with me. Left it at camp. I decided take your bow, but just watch.
About 4pm a rack buck came two steps from my stand. I drew with bare fingers, and let him get out to 8 steps. I let it go, and I stuck him almost straight up and down next to the spine. He ran off with half my arrow sticking out of his back.
I felt sick thinking no blood trail on this one. I immediately got down and went straight to the camp and got the house pet. I put him on the spot where the deer was standing, and he took off. I thought he is not on this deer because the deer was 20 yards to my left. Well I let him go, and finally realized he must be winding the deer. He took me under a bent tree and my flashlight shined on the ground where a massive puddle of blood.
The deer was not very far from there.

Was hunting in my buddies grandmother's pasture on some sawtooth trees.Bout 9 does came out about 5 mins after i sat down and i let the arrow fly at about 12 yards she ran 20 yards and ran into a barb wired fence and died there. 30 minutes later 8 does come out. Once again i let the arrow fly at about 25 yards and she ran 90 yards jumped the barbed wire fence and died right on the other side. Threw them in the truck went to my dads cleaned them and got back in the stand and had a little spiker come walking by but i was holding out for the big buck at that point. Best day of my life i can say, i missed many of deer with my bow before hand but haven't missed but one since then.
