The new technology since I quit fishing blows me away. I'm not buying a new trolling motor yet but it definitely may be a spring purchase.

I'm going to be putting this on a 17 foot aluminum boat so I don't need a 70 lb thrust TM. Will want something in the mid 40 lb range. What's out there that's not a budget buster? I know they're all probably $1200 or up but I saw some that were in the $2500 range. I'm NOT getting one of those.

Anything to stay away from, or a must have option? Anything you tell me about them will be something I don't know.

Watch Craigslist for a used. Every bass boat that I've sold with an auto trolling motor, whoever bought it wound up taking it off and replacing with a standard foot control. They then sell the used ones.

If you put a motor with less than 70lbs of thrust, you'll regret it.

Ok, so I need more power.

Why are the auto pilot/auto positioning TM's not a hot commodity? Do they not work as advertised?

To me they are a pain in the ass and a lot can go wrong with them. I'm old school and prefer a cable steer. I know it's out of your budget but the ultrex is awesome. Cable steer with spot lock.

I would look for a motor guide tour 82# or a minn kota fortrex 80#. They are both variable speed. You can run them as fast or slow as you want. You will be happier with the extra power for the grass and those windy days. Minn kota vs motor guide is a ford vs chevy debate. Everybody has their preference

I think I used the wrong terminology in my original post and title.

Spot lock....

Holds you in one spot? If so, then that's what I'm talking about, not auto steer.

Spot lock is badass. Yes it will hold you in one spot. Most of us are referencing the trolling motors that are steered with a remote

That's what I want. I want to be able to pull up to a drop off, or tree top, or bridge piling and not do anything but fish. Stay in that one spot...

So I guess I want a TM with Spot Lock, not auto positioning...

You kids and your technology! laugh

Naw that's not what I want. I want to sit in one spot and fish.

Fur me and my father in law just rigged out an aluminum boat with 3 Helix units and an Ultrex 80. One evening when we can get together I will meet you at gville and you can try out the ultrex and screen shot all my helix settings. Then you will know if you like it before you spend any money

"Spot lock" trolling motors that network to your GPS have been around for a long time. They have always been digital steering, touch the right button and the TM swings right. You can't "feel" where it's pointing without looking down and looking at it. They are good at driving a straight line but difficult to maneuver around docks or down a crooked bank.
Ultrex is a brand new trolling motor that is cable steer and will "spot lock" along with a bunch of other gps features. Check the BBC forum for who has the best price, they're pricey.

I've sent two requests to Bass Boat Central for a username and password and have not been approved yet. That's been nearly a week ago. I must not meet their qualifications....

The spot lock is the bomb. Lots of the guides down are now running 21-23ft bay boats with 36v 108 lb TMs on them and using them to bottom fish snapper, grouper, AJs on 5ft by 5ft or smaller spots. Heavy current, waves, wind, it doesnt matter. You lock it in on it and just walk back and start fishing. Dont have to pay a mate to assist with clients since they no longer have to be at the console to hold the boat on a spot. It will auto adjust to whatever is happening and hold you dead on the spot. Everybody I know that has one swears it's the best thing since sliced bread.
