For those who spray their fields before fall planting. When do you usually hit your fields? 15, 30, 45 or more days before you want to plant? I know too early gives time for something else to start to grow. Too late and the stalks and root balls wont have enough time to dry and will still be green and harder to disk (or burn). Our goal is to try and save the time/cost of moving a tractor around and bush hogging prior to planting, and to make disking easier. We can use the boomless sprayer from the back of a pu truck or 4 wheeler and be much faster and easier to move around on widely spaced fields.
If we are figuring correctly @ a qt per acre of gly its roughly $6 a acre to poison it. Compared to the fuel cost, man hours on the tractor per acre, and hauling tractor back and forth Im thinking wed come out ahead spraying and not bush hogging. Do any of yall do it this way and not bush hog?

I sprayed mine a little over a week ago. I burnt it off and disced this past Friday.

Burning is the way to go but I'm just scared to do it. I'm always by myself and if I burn my stuff is one thing but burning the neighbors stuff is what really scares me.
I got a new property that I been working on this summer. Spraying, discing, liming, etc. but try as I might I'm still am going to have to put a subsoiler on that red clay. I believe without it all the rest is useless. I was by myself when I burnt mine. I disced the outside edge of my plot for a fire break. One good loop around the field with my drip torch and it was done. It was dry enough that I got a good burn on it. Nothing wrong with being concerned with it, though.

I cut mine three weeks ago and sprayed about 10 days later, when I saw new growth coming on. It is now dead as dead can be. We will likely plant last weekend of September or first weekend in October, depending on whether or not there is rain in the forecast.

You can catch gly on sale for about $4.50 per quart. . About $5 per quart is what I figured and a $1 for vehicle gas for each field. Best price Ive found is Agrisupply Gly @ $40 for 2.5 gal but the shipping cost makes it more than buying locally. Im sure if could buy it in bulk 55 gal drum or larger tote would save a good bit. Might have to ck into that and see if anyone would want to go in on one. Burning is the way to go but I'm just scared to do it. I'm always by myself and if I burn my stuff is one thing but burning the neighbors stuff is what really scares me.
Thats me. I know guys who burn off fields for years with no problems but that probably wouldn't be my luck. But it does make it a lot easier doing it.

I believe in burning. Its great. But I tried burning a dried kudzu patch once. Fire break around it. But all that dried kudzu in trees....BIG,TALL trees. I lit that dried kudzu and it burns like gasoline. BIG, TALL trees on fire and burning vines falling over the fire break. Finally got it out but it put some fear in me on burning. Yeah, probably not a good idea to light it off with that much ladder fuels.

4-6 weeks prior to planting. This will allow time for all the roots to die and the plant to just crumble up and make it a lot easier to disc. Normally you don't get enough rain for much to sprout up in that amount of time. This year has not been normal as far as rain but am sure that time frame will still work. I use 50oz per 25 gal in my sprayer which will cover about an acre. When those weeds get tall and not growing a lot especially this time of year 32oz per acre is a little light IMO.

I buy the 30gal drums of Cornerstone gly at the Co-Op and it comes out the about $12 a gallon. I've read that you need to keep it from freezing but we leave ours outside under a covered shed and that drum lasts us for at least 2 years. It works as well in year 2 as it did in year 1.

21 to 30 days for me before it gets the disk. I'll spray, then in a week hit any missed spots, then give it another week or two .
