PCP, you're right on the money. The Rio 1 oz 8's are loaded at 1250 fps whereas a lot of the cheaper 20 gauge loads are loaded to 1125 or 1165fps. Good dove hunts have gotten so few and far between lately that I don't load my own anymore. Your post is the exact reason why I shoot the heavier Rios in a 20. It's the factory equivalent of what you're saying and what I used to load for myself. Sometimes hard to find but I can generally get them for $5.99 to $6.50/box down here.

I don't pretend to save a lot of money by loading my own, but I do believe I have better shells. I use 8s for doves, 1.25oz in the 12 and 1 oz in a 20. I load them to do 1250 so the lead doesn't carry. I had a period of several years where I didn't take time to load any and used factory shells. I get a lot fewer cripples with my shells. I'm with you on that one there is not a lot to be saved by reloading but the quality is worth it. I've cut down to 1 oz of 8's for 12ga @1150-1200fps and use it for everything. They smoke targets and birds if I do my part.

Same here, I load a fast dove load with 1 1/8 oz at 1400 fps. Has a kick to it but don't take near the shots to get a limit. Still, it is not fun loading a case on a single stage loader.

He slowed them down to 1300 or a little below before they would pattern worth a dam

I bet the 1 1/4 oz load @ 1400 fps would kick like a mule. I use Longshot powder with a PISK wad in Fiocchi hull, the max load runs 1500 fps. The max load hurts but cuts the lead tremendously.
