Anyone use a Collet Neck sizing die instead of a full length resizing die? I've never used mine but my understanding is that I should be using it AFTER I full length resize then fire a round instead of full length resizing every time. No?

The only folks I know that use the collet dies are benchresters and folks that turn necks. A collet die sizes to the size of the collet which can be changed. Based on the amount of material in the neck, and the size of the collet, different neck tensions can be obtained, fit in tight neck chambers, etc. I see zero reason to do it after a full length resize. Maybe after once fired in your chamber.

That's the situation I was speaking of ...

Here's what I read from Midway.com

Quote:

This die sizes only the neck to preserve the perfect fit of fire forming. A collet squeezes the case neck against a precision mandrel for a perfect bullet fit with minimum run-out. No case lube is needed. Cases last about 10 times longer. Only reload cases that have been fired in you firearm.

As always, before trying something that I read on the interwebz I try to ask those with experience doing so. I'm not convinced that I need to / or should do this

I am using Lapua brass which is fairly expensive so I'd like to extend their lives ... if possible

I am just leery of using neck dies in a hunting rifle. I've used neck dies in my 22-250 and they feed fine. It would be my luck though that I couldn't get one chambered when that buck of a lifetime counted on it. I don't shoot my hunting rifles enough to really worry about brass life. I understand it though.

Experiment. See what works for you.

Running all your reloads thru your rifle before you hunt has worked for me. A case mic. is also helpful. I know that anything above +1 on my case mic. won't chamber in my 270.

I only neck size my .308 hunting rounds. .003 neck tension is what I want. I have a case gauge tat I check my brass with and I keep my brass separated by which rifle it came from. No more than I shoot I'm plenty comfortable with this method.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.
